guide / Vision / Don't Panic Festival

A strategy conversation that runs the Don't Panic Festival session through the team's standard discovery questions (what is it / who cares / who is involved / what changes / what is the proof / what makes it real).

Strategy session for the Don't Panic Festival โ€” a decentralised 42-location, November 5th Hitchhiker radio food festival tied to Ethereum / Devcon.

A strategy session designing the "Don't Panic Festival" โ€” a coordinated, decentralised "42 location" event for the Hitchhiker / Game of 42 project, timed for November 5th and pegged to the Ethereum / Devcon (EthMumbai) calendar, a few days before a Marvin Crowns token-launch moment and adjacent to a Brian Eno sound-art event and Web Summit. The team works through a structured prompt set โ€” who cares, who's involved, what has changed, proof it's working, when it feels real โ€” to define an accessible, participatory "radio food festival" that anyone can join just by cooking food at home and tuning into a radio stream and saying "don't panic." The creative core is a curated celebration of doom: existential-extinction clips (heat death of the universe, nuclear annihilation, AI/Terminator apocalypse, the Earth demolished by Vogons) set to commissioned apocalyptic playlists and "last meal before the end of the universe" chef menus, each beat resolving on a deadpan, cabin-crew-calm "Don't Panic." Underneath the absurdist surface sit targeted causes โ€” regenerative/sustainable farming (a ~50,000-farm network in northern India), food security, local food-delivery partners โ€” funded via fundraising dinners rather than per-event meme coins. The group resolves that "Don't Panic" is not an event meme but a governance meme reintroduced every November 5th, monetised through IP licensing and tithing, with hosts onboarded as owner-members via the Hitchhiker app/map. The call ends unresolved on logistics: it's near midnight and material is still owed to Henry/Robbie.

Key points

  • Don't Panic Festival: a participatory, decentralised "42 location" event on November 5th (alternative Fireworks/Bonfire Night), purely Hitchhiker-themed, accessible by just cooking food at home and tuning into the radio.
  • Tone is the product: a celebration of doom-scrolling โ€” absurd extinction-level clips (heat death of the universe, nuclear war, AI/Terminator apocalypse, Vogon demolition, Restaurant at the End of the Universe) curated like Super Bowl ads that all resolve on a calm "Don't Panic"; explicitly more cosmic/absurd than worthy turtle-and-plastic-bag environmentalism.
  • Radio food festival: local/internet radio stations worldwide are the key partner ("get one involved and you've almost got a festival"); commissioned apocalyptic playlists/soundtracks (vs Holst's optimistic Planets), "last meal before the end of the universe" chef menus listing food miles, gargle blasters, plus map/cafe-hop pocket-of-a-city formats.
  • Who cares / who's involved: the general Hitchhiker public (doom-fatigued sci-fi/humour fans), crypto communities wanting out of the bubble, sustainable farm-to-fork people, restaurants/cafes/community centres, storytellers, buskers, stand-up poets, board-game hosts, pop-up/dumpster-truck Michelin dinners; streaming partners like NTS / BBC Radio 6.
  • Ethereum / Devcon tie-in: featured on the EthMumbai main stage (with Audrey Tang, sponsored by the Ethereum Foundation), a few days before a Marvin Crowns token sale / whitelisting; positioned to let Ethereum/Vitalik break out of the bubble and look good to non-crypto, environmental and government audiences. Stack leans on Ethereum + Swarm (currently Gnosis) as a provenance ledger for smart contracts, liquidity pools and IP assets.
  • Meme-coin caution: a per-restaurant launchpad (OpenServe-fork "mint your own token") is debated but largely rejected โ€” short-term events become pump-and-dumps that invite scammers. Specific locations may fundraise (cash, time, occasionally crypto); the project does not launch a "Don't Panic token."
  • Don't Panic = governance meme, not event meme: the meme does real work (reverse Marvin's worst-case list into positive steps; usable Tuesday, in VC pitches, in project risk reviews); kept alive by reintroducing it every November 5th. Value lives in the meme + IP, licensed with the standard tithing/repayment-to-community arrangement.
  • Hub network + onboarding: extend the existing hub network (~12, recently ~40 spaces; talk to Nickelina) toward 42 / 420,000 venues; hosts become Hitchhiker owner-members by dropping a map pin, gaining playlists, radio, an agent guiding event missions; attendees onboard via tickets or reading the Don't Panic guide.
  • Proof & feels-real: success = the "Don't Panic" meme trending on X / going viral on TikTok, the globe covered in map pins, signups deepening identity/trust-graph, and follow-on secondary/tertiary actions; feels real at ~42 countries running meals plus ~6 standout mini-festivals (Mumbai, Finsbury Park, Barcelona) and main-stage EthMumbai presence.

Action items

  • Lock the decentralised "model for the event" so every location runs its own expression of Don't Panic; prioritise getting the soundtrack and food-event format right above all else.
  • Commission apocalyptic playlists/sound pieces and "last meal before the end of the universe" chef menus (with food-miles framing); challenge artists for the "soundtrack of the AI takeover / alien invasion."
  • Recruit local radio stations (and a Mumbai Hitchhiker radio station/podcast announcing EthMumbai talks) and streaming partners (NTS, BBC Radio 6) as anchor partners worldwide.
  • Onboard the regenerative-farming network in northern India (~50,000 farms) and local food-delivery / farm-to-fork partners as sponsored content and "improbable tour" experiences.
  • Grow the hub network from ~12/40 toward 42 venues โ€” contact Nickelina; give hosts enough notice plus a ready-made sound + food event playbook.
  • Secure EthMumbai/Devcon main-stage presence with Audrey Tang and Vitalik; explore a follow-up farm-to-food supply-chain hackathon sponsored by partners.
  • Coordinate timing with the Marvin Crowns token sale / whitelisting two-to-three days after the festival, channelling attendees toward "take action."
  • Treat Don't Panic as licensable IP/governance meme under the standard tithing arrangement; allow location-level fundraising (cash/time/optional crypto) but do not launch a project meme coin.
  • Build a Don't Panic dinner-party game (Cards Against Humanity style) for at-home play.
  • Finish the strategy material for Henry (and the report for Robbie), including the form and payment โ€” outstanding at session end.
