Who cares
Constituencies. The deliberate scope is wide. First, "all the hitchhikers," meaning "anyone who's contributed anything"; the pair frame the AGM as "awards night" and "future casting night" for "everybody," congratulating contributors and exciting them about "what's happening next." Second, observers: "all the critics or the journalists or the people that are interested and the sceptical and the positive and the hopeful," plus "the industry of reviewing and assessing and reporting." Third, "the audience" being onboarded, and those "anticipating" the Improbable Lottery "on the grapevine."
Nuance or tension. A deliberate inversion: "the audience sort of don't care, they're just being introduced to it." They care that "it's going to be exciting and interesting," but "they're going to assess it after that onboarding." So caring is split between contributors who already belong and a watching, judging outside that withholds verdict until after the introduction. This widens the audience versus a purely internal contributor group.
