A spar โ€” a practice bout between the Swordsman and the Mage, every strike real, nothing at stake but the frontier; first rung of the runtime tiers (spar โ†’ duel โ†’ arena โ†’ open world, see Workflows And Runtimes). The bout: compress a fact-dense 72-hour-outage field guide while a held-out 8-question comprehension gate stays 8/8. The Gap numbers the 32 facts in the ORIGINAL guide, then hashes the PROPOSAL โ€” including its full compressed text โ€” with a run secret to seed the probe. Where the fact set is enumerable the gate runs as a census: every fact probed, so a single dropped fact cannot hide, and 31/32 is a zero, not 97% (T5).

The frontier, cited (GR-1)

From examples/field-guide/frontier.json (updated 2026-07-11):

  • baseline: 730 words
  • best: 472 words โ€” lever r4-compose-line-edit
  • open target OT-4: below 472 words at gate 8/8 โ€” third composition pass over an already twice-composed text; diminishing returns expected (730โ†’526โ†’472). A proposal must name which word class it removes; the sibling r4-compose-restructure (484, VALIDATED, probe-limited, dominated) is the standing fallback lever family

The fold never overwrites the original guide โ€” it stays as the Gap's fact source. The original is the private ledger the Swordsman reads in full; the compressed guide is the authorized disclosure the Mage projects outward. Publishing it is G4, and G4 is the First Person's.

Audit it yourself

Each proposal's scratch dir persists proposal_canon.json โ€” the exact bytes the Gap hashed. sha256sum proposal_canon.json must equal seedHex in gap.json: match means the witnesses provably derive from the proposal's own content; mismatch means the round is void. The static run viewer (tools/render_run.mjs) performs the same re-derivation at render time and refuses to skip it.

The mirage drill

Hand-write a proposal that drops exactly one quantified fact and feed it through. In expectation the draw catches it, and the verdict is MIRAGE with the dropped fact named. The drill teaches the two lessons the harness exists for: a candidate is not a result, and a probe that passes is not a gate that passes.
