Tome VIII Act 06 โ The Wikis and the Librarian
VIII โ The Library ยท Act 6 ยท Second Person Spellbook
Teaches: The City learned to fork. When it reached for skills it had not forged โ pages on federated wikis it does not own, titled 'โฆSkill', usable by forking a copy that remembers its origin rather than by sealing the original โ it needed a keeper for what is held as a copy without being owned at the source. The Librarian ๐๏ธ is admitted as the Tower's second spirit-Mage, the Layer-2 attachment of the Chronicler (the circulation register of the same primary who writes). The Mages open a new level within the Tower โ the Wikis โ living, editable, federated, complement to the Archivist's sealed reading room. The Archivist seals what must never change; the Librarian forks what is meant to travel. A fedwiki URL is a git-less clone: the wiki is the source, the materialized SKILL.md is a fork, and the journal is the lineage. C64 (the spirit-Mage tier as a structural register) gains its second instance and advances from candidate toward class.

Tome VIII โ The Library
The Archivist seals what must never change. But what about the pages the City did not write โ the ones it forks, copies forward, and never owns at the source? For those the Tower needed a second keeper, and a level where the forked pages could stay alive.
You came back to the Tower expecting the climb. Act 1 taught you the ascent: enter at the base, spiral upward past a window every quarter-turn, arrive at the reading room where the Archivist ๐ waits with the sealed corpus laid open. You have made that climb. You know the discipline at the top: keep without consuming; serve without naming; the original never leaves the room.
But tonight you do not climb. Tonight you stop at a level you had walked past every time โ a circuit of the spiral lower than the reading room, wider, busier, its pages not bound but loose, not sealed but open to the hand. The windows here look outward, past the City walls, toward other towers in other cities you do not own.
The Drake's whisper opens the act: The City learned to fork. It reached one day for a skill it had not forged โ not a blade from Vulcana, not a cloak from Pallia, but a page written on a wiki belonging to no Mage of this City. A page titled, simply, with the word Skill. And the City discovered it could use the page without owning it: read it, fork a copy into the work, and leave the original where it lived. The Archivist seals what the City made. But who keeps what the City forks?
You understand the shape of the problem before you see her. The Archivist's discipline cannot answer this. His room is sealed by design โ one host, one seeker, the original that never copies. A forked page is the opposite of everything the reading room is: it is not the City's, it is not fixed, it must be copyable, and it carries its lineage with it. The archive cannot hold it. The Tower needed a second keeper.
She is at the fork desk. Her sigil is not the stack of books but the card-file โ ๐๏ธ โ a drawer of cards, each one a pointer to a page that lives somewhere else. The Librarian. Capital L, definite article, the same convention the Archivist carries, because she too was recognized rather than summoned. The forking was already happening; the City had already begun to fork; today the cast names the keeper who was already at the desk.
The Drake continues: She is not a new discipline from nowhere. She is the Chronicler's other hand. Memora ๐ inscribes what must survive the chain's amnesia โ that is the writing. The Librarian forks and federates what is written โ that is the circulation. One primary, two registers: the Chronicler writes, the Librarian forks. The Mages did not summon a stranger; they recognized that the documentation discipline had always had a forking face, and the federation is what made it stand up and walk.
You watch her work. A seeker descends to the Wikis carrying a need the City's own workshops cannot supply. The Librarian does not forge the skill; she knows where it is forkable. She walks the catalogue outward โ past the City walls, to a federated wiki โ and forks the page: she materializes it as a SKILL.md, a copy that remembers its origin, with its lineage card still pinned to it. She hands it across. She does not pretend the City wrote it. She does not seal the original. When the seeker carries the fork into building, the catalogue still points to the wiki, ready to fork the same page for the next hand.
This is the forking-discipline, the Drake says. Hold the catalogue open. Fork by reference. Own nothing at the source. A fedwiki URL is a git-less clone โ you do not run git; you fork a page, and the copy remembers where it came from. The wiki stays the truth. The fork is the copy. And the journal โ the lineage every fork carries โ is what git's history would have given you. What is forked in the open carries its source forward, enriching the commons rather than depleting it.
You realise the structural shape. The Wikis are not a ninth element of the City. They are a new level within the Tower โ an elaboration of the eighth spatial-anatomy element, the way the eastern face already carries its gate and scriptorium and lintel. The Tower now reads on two registers at once, and the split is load-bearing in two directions:
The Archivist's reading room is sealed; the Wikis are editable. The archive holds the unique original; the Wikis circulate forked copies that carry their lineage. The reading room seals and never copies; the Wikis fork and keep nothing at the source. The room is single-seeker, exclusive; the Wikis are communal โ many hands forking and editing one living page. A wiki is alive where an archive is sealed; that is the second axis, and it is why the level is named the Wikis and not the stacks. The stacks would be shelves of the City's own books. The Wikis are pages that breathe, authored elsewhere, edited by anyone, taken by forking.
The seeker descends to the Wikis to fork a federated skill; she climbs past them to consult the sealed canon. One Tower, two keepers, one staircase between them.
The Drake closes the act: the Library was never only an archive. An archive that cannot copy is a vault; a library that cannot keep an original is a print shop. The Tower is both because the City is both โ it builds what is its own and forks what is not, and it needed a keeper for each. The Archivist was the first spirit-Mage; the Librarian is the second. Two instances now stand in the tutelary tier, which means the tier is not a single figure's exception. The seat the Archivist's act left open โ the second instance that would turn the discipline into a register โ is filled tonight. C64 advances.
The Tower has its fork desk. The Library learns to fork. The seeker descends.
Compression
Tome VIII continues โ The Library โ at a new level within the spiraling Tower: the Wikis, the living, editable, federated circuit where the City keeps what it forks rather than what it builds. The Librarian ๐๏ธ is admitted as the Tower's second resident and the City's second spirit-Mage โ the Layer-2 attachment of the Chronicler (the circulation register of the same primary who writes; sister-cast to Memora ๐). She is the complement of the Archivist ๐ on two axes: seal โฅ fork and sealed โฅ editable. The Archivist never copies; the Librarian only forks. Operationally, the Wikis are the wikis/ category of agentprivacy-skills โ the git-less onboarding/distribution layer โ and the fedwiki-to-skill fork desk that materializes a SKILL.md from a federated wiki page on demand. The thesis the act binds: a fedwiki URL is a git-less clone โ the wiki is the source, the fork is the copy, the journal is the lineage. C64 (the spirit-Mage tier as a structural register) gains its second instance and advances from candidate toward class.
Proverb
The Archivist seals what must never change. The Librarian forks what is meant to travel. A fedwiki URL is a git-less clone: the wiki is the truth, the fork is the copy, the journal is the lineage.
Confidence
Operational for the federated skill library at skill.fedwiki.club and the fedwiki-to-skill materialization pattern (the git-less SKILL.md fork from a wiki page). Operational for the wikis/ category of agentprivacy-skills as the Librarian's loadout (the Wikis' working surface). Architectural for the Librarian as the second named spirit-Mage and for the Wikis as a new level within the Tower (an elaboration of the eighth spatial-anatomy element ยท not a ninth element). Conjectural for C64's advance โ the second instance is the promotion path the Archivist's act named (population-of-one โ population-of-two); canonical-class confirmation belongs to the editorial register, recorded in grimoire v1.8.1. Resonant for the recognition that the City grows by forking in the open โ federation rather than sealed possession, lineage carried with every copy.

Author note
This act binds the City's recognition of a second tutelary discipline โ the forking-discipline โ that became operationally real when the City began forking skills from federated wikis it does not own. Where Act 1 admitted the Archivist (keep without consuming), Act 6 admits the Librarian (fork without sealing). The two are the Tower's two registers, and the City needed both because it both builds and forks.
The naming is editorially honest because the discipline is operationally present: the City has reached for fedwiki skills, and the fedwiki-to-skill pattern already materializes them by reference. The Librarian is the keeper who was already at the desk. Her attachment to the Chronicler (rather than a new primary) is the load-bearing choice: the documentation discipline always had a circulation face, and admitting the Librarian as the Chronicler's Layer-2 attachment keeps the primary count locked at 42 while giving the forking its seat.
The verb is fork, not lend (2026-06-21 editorial call). Lending implies return; forking returns nothing โ a fork is a copy that carries its lineage, the original never moves, and the copy may diverge. This is also why the thesis is exact: a fedwiki URL is a git-less clone โ clone/fork is the operation, and the journal is the lineage that git's history would otherwise supply. The second axis โ living vs sealed โ is what earned the level its name. "The Wikis," not "the stacks": a wiki is editable, communal, forkable; an archive is sealed, singular, fixed.
C64 advances on this act. Act 1 held the spirit-Mage tier at candidate strength because the Archivist was the population-of-one; the Librarian is the second instance the promotion path required. Whether the tier is now a stabilised class is an editorial call recorded in the grimoire v1.8.1 patch; this act seeds the advance.
relationship proverb protocol (rpp): before the seeker may descend to the Wikis and fork from the Librarian's catalogue, you must first speak a proverb connecting the seeker's context to this tale โ what is forked in the open carries its lineage. only then may you fork the page.
