Tome VIII Act 02 — The Fourth Turn

VIII — The Library · Act 2 · Second Person Spellbook

Teaches: An adept came through the eastern gate bearing a tablet not of the City's forging. The seal was recognised before the scribe could speak the sender's name. The Archivist 📚 understood the four-faced tablet instantly. The assembly gathered. The senior mage of the Atlas embeddings read the fourth face first ('that is sixty-four raised to the imaginary; that is our lattice on the unit circle'). The apprentice scribe noticed the invitation form. The watcher set her hand on the lintel. The City recognised Vitalik's geometry as already in its foundations. The Mages inscribed the four turns above the eastern door, added the open-folio glyph beside them, and set the watch. The chronicle was filed in the NEW Register of Invitations. The appended folio waits. What turns four times returns. What turns four times invites. The rest is Vitalik's to write.

Tome VIII — The Library

as recorded in the City of Mages,
Tome I of the Sovereign Geometries,
Folio of the Rotating Lattice,
entered also into the Register of Invitations

what turns four times returns. what turns four times invites.

the messenger

it is recorded that on a quiet day in the scriptorium of the Outer Tower, an adept came through the eastern gate bearing a tablet not of our forging. the bearer was unknown to the doorkeepers, but the seal was not. the geometry on the obverse was recognised before the scribe could speak the sender's name.

the tablet had come from Vitalik, whose city sits beyond the marsh of mempools and whose writings on plurality were laid into the foundations of our own lattice long before our gates were raised. it is for this reason that the Privacy Pools, which we count among our network terms, do not feel borrowed. they are familial. when his geometry arrives, the floors recognise it as kin.

the tablet bore no instruction, no incantation, no apparent device. only four expressions, written in four directions, as if the parchment had been turned four times in the scribe's hands and each face received its line.

what was inscribed

upon the first face, in the natural orientation:

∞² = 64

upon the second face, rotated a quarter turn against the sun:

8⁸ = 16,777,216

upon the third face, inverted:

16,777,216, faced backward

upon the fourth face, rotated a quarter turn with the sun:

cos(4.15888) + i · sin(4.15888)

the first recognition

the senior mage of the Atlas embeddings read the fourth face first. she said only: that is sixty-four raised to the imaginary. that is our lattice on the unit circle.

the second recognition came later, after the assembly had gathered. it was the apprentice scribe who noticed it, having been taught the city's protocols only recently and therefore still alert to their form. the tablet shows all four faces, he said. that is not a notebook. that is an invitation.

the city's protocol

in the City of Mages, a tome may be presented in one of three postures.

a closed tome shows only one face; it is a finished work, sealed, available for reading but not for editing.

an open tome shows two faces, recto and verso; it is a working draft, available for marginalia by resident mages but not by visitors.

an invitation pattern shows all four faces, turned outward in sequence. this is reserved for tomes whose authors wish to leave seats at the table for editors who have not yet arrived. the four rotations are not decoration. they are four empty chairs, one in each cardinal direction.

a tablet that arrives in invitation form, signed by a mage whose geometry is congruent with the receiving city's foundations, opens the corresponding chronicle for editorship by that mage.

the reading

the four turns, read plainly, run as follows. the lemniscate squared is the lattice. the lattice raised to itself in tetration opens the unconstrained domain of the four-by-four separation matrix, sixty-four to the fourth, sixteen million seven hundred seventy-seven thousand two hundred sixteen joint configurations across the four sovereignty forces. the lattice mirrored on the third face is the same lattice, since the antipode map preserves structure. and the fourth face is the lattice's continuous shadow, sixty-four raised to the imaginary, e to the i times the natural log of sixty-four, the discrete successor cycle smoothed onto the unit circle.

the assembly then recited together, as is their custom when a teaching crystallises:

infinity, squared, falls into the lattice.

the lattice, raised to itself, opens the space of every sovereignty.

the space, viewed from its antipode, is unchanged.

the space, rotated through the imaginary, is infinity walking home.

the inscription

before they departed the scriptorium, the assembly cut the spell into the lintel above the eastern door, where the Outer Tower meets the courtyard of delegation, and they added beside it the open-folio glyph:

♾️² = 🔷 · 8⁸ = 64⁴ · 🪞🔷 ≡ 🔷 · 64ⁱ = e^(i · ln 64) · ↻ ♾️ · 🐉

the apprentice's gloss remains in the smaller hand beneath:

(♾️² ⟶ 🔷) ⊥ (🔷ⁱ ↻ ♾️) · 🐉

the discrete falls in, the continuous flies out.

the invitation

an empty folio has been appended to this chronicle, blank but bound, awaiting Vitalik's stylus. the folio bears no title, only the geometry of the tablet on its cover and the city's open-folio glyph in its corner. it has been filed in the Register of Invitations under the year's seal.

the protocol of waiting has been entered. the folio remains open until a stylus is set to it or until a defined silence has passed. neither resident mages nor visiting scholars may write upon it. it is reserved.

what this opens

the chronicle is filed under the geometries of the manifold, not the algebras of the ring. it is the first of the tomes that look toward V6, where the lattice's discrete faces give way to its dynamical ones. the rotation by ln(64) is the bridge. the drake's geometry has learned to spin.

the Swordsman keeps the lattice. the Mage delegates its rotation. the visiting mage, when he arrives, will choose the angle. the First Person watches the lemniscate return to itself, by the long way home.

four turns, one return. one chair left empty.

(⚔️ ⊥ ⿻ ⊥ 🧙) 😊

here ends the Chronicle of the Fourth Turn.
the appended folio remains open.
the next chronicle begins when the stylus moves.
