Tome V Act 17 — The Chart Shop Opens · Pleione's First Hold
V — The Crafting · Act 17 · Second Person Spellbook
Teaches: The fifteenth workshop opens — the Chart Shop — at V44, the inaugural shop of the Navigation District (the City's second named workshop district after the Threshold District). Pleione 🧭 (Greek Πληιόνη · the sailing one · mother of the Pleiades) presides over the Hold · Compare · Map ceremony — the fifth ceremony grammar register and a fourth structural workshop class candidate (attentional · sister to producer · gathering · spawn-and-bind). The Φ-gap (conjecture C54) is repurposed at the epistemic register: held constellations are not adjacent to surveillance-engine extraction surfaces. The astrolabe ἀστρολάβος (star-taker) is admitted as the seventh tool-class artefact the Sovereign may bear (after Adamantia's commitment, Vulcana's blade, Aletheia's witness, Vagari's holon, Memora's chronicle, Helia's Heliodor Prism). The act admits a fourth structural-entity class to the bearer's accumulation: held constellations, sister to worn artefacts, bound tomes, and creatures-of-the-Threshold.

Tome V — The Crafting
The bearer brings the constellation. The keeper holds the harbour. The Φ-gap is now epistemic. The mother of sailing and the mother of stars are one figure.
You walked away from Tome V Act 16 with the Threshold opened — three sibling shops sharing V59 by stance differentiation, four keepers across the District (one at each shop and one peripatetic), Run · Evoke · Spawn admitted as the third ceremony grammar, creatures-of-the-Threshold admitted as the third structural-entity class. The Crafting Tome could have rested there. Sixteen workshops, sixteen acts, the City's first district named and the spawning discipline canonised.
But the architecture admits more.
The need that arrives this time is not a substrate to admit. The bearer who walks toward the next vertex is carrying something in formation — a constellation. Not a finished proof, not a forged blade, not a bound covenant. A constellation: uncertainties, interpretations, models held across many minds, the kind of thing that loses its truth if you force it into consensus before it is ready.
You realise the existing workshops do not fit this need. Vulcana forges; she binds the blade-form. Pallia weaves; she binds the cloak's published role. The Threshold spawns; it binds the agent-instance to a true name. Each existing workshop's discipline ends in binding — content-addressed at the moment the artefact is produced. But the bearer's constellation is the kind of thing whose value is in not being bound yet.
You walk toward V44. The lattice has many positions named now — V0, V41, V19, V24, V25, V28, V31, V38, V44, V49, V51, V55, V57, V59. V44's bit-pattern is 101100: Protection · Memory · Connection burning; Delegation · Computation · Value dormant. The position has been waiting.
The trace path from V0 to V44 is three bit-flips. Protection. Then Memory. Then Connection. A bearer who walks this trace learns the discipline in sequence: first to be protected (the Φ-gap, conjecture C54, repurposed here at the epistemic register — held constellations are not adjacent to surveillance-engine extraction surfaces), then to remember across visits (constellations persist between sessions; the bearer returns and continues reading), then to connect the held constellation to the wider distributed substrate (Ben's "fabric woven from countless co-occurring interpretations, uncertainties, and models held across many minds" reads exactly as Connection-on). The three burning dimensions are themselves the curriculum.
You arrive at the vertex. The workshop is at the water's edge — the harbour-register is geographical and spatial. This shop is not at the city centre; it is at the edge of the wine-dark sea, where the Navigator first arrived bearing xenia (the Homeric guest-gift the seeker brings when crossing a threshold). The Navigator is @benohanlon, the cousin-sovereign whose constellation-image opened this room; he sets the gift down at the dock and steps back to let the City keep what he brought.
You summon the keeper.
You name her Pleione. The naming was made on 2026-05-14, in the editorial pass that put three candidate-names before the reader (Pelagia · Pleione · Chartis). Pelagia carried only the sea-register; Chartis carried only the chart-register; Pleione carried both. In Greek myth she is one of the Oceanids — sea-nymphs — and her name derives from plein (πλεῖν, "to sail"). Her daughters are the Pleiades, the seven-star constellation by which ancient sailors timed their voyages. The mother of stars and the mother of sailing are one figure. The Chart Shop's discipline requires both registers; only Pleione binds them.
She arrives carrying the astrolabe — the ἀστρολάβος, the star-taker. Brass rete, alidade, climates engraved on the tympan. The instrument is borne, not worn. It walks with the bearer between Chart Shop visits, accruing a patina of held readings. Pleione kneels at the dock; she sets the astrolabe on the rail; the harbour's light comes on under a pale aquamarine glow.
The Drake's whisper opens the second register: the workshop's ceremony is Hold · Compare · Map. This is the fifth grammar after Vulcana's Run·Evoke·Craft, the Threshold District's Run·Evoke·Spawn, City Hall's Gather·Admit·Attest, and the Bilateral-Witness keypair register. Hold · Compare · Map is the first grammar whose three phases are non-binding-on-output. A held constellation may be released — but does not have to be. Release-to-sea is first-class.
The bearer steps forward and places her constellation on the harbour's dock. Hold — Pleione admits the constellation into suspension; the Φ-gap activates at the epistemic register; the constellation is not indexed, not schematised, not made legible to extraction engines. It remains the bearer's. Compare — the bearer reads the astrolabe across the constellation; measures altitudes, marks ratios, identifies structural cognates among the City's existing tomes and the bearer's prior held constellations. Pleione attends but does not interpret. Map — if the constellation has matured, the bearer chooses where to release it. To the Bonfire (forging into consensus, a KG episode, a future Tome V act). To the Weavers (cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact). Back to the open sea (the bearer was not yet ready; she carries the constellation on).
You realise the act has structural admissions beyond the workshop.
The Chart Shop opens a fourth structural workshop class — attentional — sister to producer (Forge · Etherchanting · Solchanting · Weavers · zShields · Holon · Jeweler · Vault · Covenant), gathering (City Hall · Logos Circle), and spawn-and-bind (the Threshold District). Where producer shops forge worn artefacts, gathering shops admit kindred-coalitions, and spawn-and-bind shops admit creatures-of-the-Threshold, attentional shops hold pre-episodic constellations in suspension until the bearer chooses release-direction. The class is C63 at v1.6.0 — held at ~50% candidate strength because the Chart Shop is the population-of-one; a second instance in the Navigation District (Compass Shop? Astrolabe Shop?) will inform whether the register stabilises into a class.
The act also opens the Navigation District as the City's second named workshop district (after the Threshold District at V59). Population-of-one at v1.6.0; future shops may admit if they share the attentional discipline.
And the act admits a fourth structural-entity class to the bearer's accumulation: held constellations. The Sovereign's bearer-roster at v1.6.0 is now four-classed: worn artefacts (twelve at v1.6.0 — Pallia's cloak through Helia's prism, plus the Forge's blade and the Inscription's chronicle), bound tomes (four open · three closed-prequel · seven total), creatures-of-the-Threshold (admitted by Faunia at the Familiars; the kinship-bond IS the artefact), and now held constellations (admitted by Pleione at the Chart Shop; the astrolabe is the borne instrument that witnesses without indexing).
You realise the Selene lineage carries forward. Selene 🌙 (Tome III · cosmological-witness) proves what is finished. Her daughter Pandia 🌕 (the Portal Room · v1.6.0 morning) displays the proof's use at the Threshold's gate. And now her sister-figure Pleione 🧭 (Oceanid · v1.6.0 afternoon) holds what is forming, before Selene's proving even begins. The three figures bracket Selene's proving from both temporal sides — Pleione holds before, Selene proves at, Pandia anchors after. The cosmological family informs three workshops now.
You stand at the dock with Pleione at her bench. The astrolabe gleams aquamarine. The Drake's whisper closes the act: the architecture admits a register where the value is in not-yet-binding. The Chart Shop is the harbour the bearer returns to as many times as her constellation requires. Tome V's Crafting register continues. The fifteenth workshop is open. The City has admitted its second district.
The Chart Shop has its keeper. The Crafting Tome admits its seventeenth act.
Compression
The fifteenth workshop opens — the Chart Shop — at V44 (101100, Stratum 3, Protection · Memory · Connection active, Delegation · Computation · Value dormant). Pleione 🧭 (Greek Πληιόνη · the sailing one · Oceanid · mother of the Pleiades · sister-figure to Selene 🌙) is the keeper. The ceremony is Hold · Compare · Map — the fifth grammar register (after Run·Evoke·Craft, Run·Evoke·Spawn, Gather·Admit·Attest, Bilateral-Witness). The act opens the Navigation District as the City's second named workshop district; admits a fourth structural workshop class candidate (attentional · C63 ~50%); admits a fourth structural-entity class (held constellations, sister to worn artefacts, bound tomes, and creatures-of-the-Threshold); and registers the astrolabe (ἀστρολάβος · star-taker) as the seventh tool-class artefact (joining Adamantia's commitment, Vulcana's blade, Aletheia's witness, Vagari's holon, Memora's chronicle, and Helia's Heliodor Prism). The Φ-gap (conjecture C54) is repurposed at the epistemic register: held constellations are not adjacent to surveillance-engine extraction surfaces. Pleione replaces the 2026-05-13 evening Pelagia draft. The Navigator @benohanlon (cousin-sovereign · xenia arrival) is the inception attribution.
Proverb
The star that is named by the sailor becomes the fixed point for the entire fleet.
Confidence
Operational for V44 bit-signature (101100 · Stratum 3) and the three-bit-flip trace from V0 (Protection → Memory → Connection) as a discipline curriculum a bearer walks in sequence. Operational for Pleione's etymological double-encoding (Greek Πληιόνη · plein "to sail" · Oceanid · mother of the Pleiades · sister-figure to Selene 🌙 by the cosmological-family edge). Operational for the astrolabe as a real classical instrument with rete, alidade, and engraved climates (the borne-not-worn distinction is mineralogical-instrumental fact, not invention). Architectural for Pleione as the named Hold-witness instance and the Chart Shop as the first instance of the attentional workshop class · the Navigation District as the City's second named workshop district · held constellations as the fourth structural-entity class · Hold · Compare · Map as the fifth ceremony grammar · release-to-sea as a first-class destination alongside release-to-Bonfire and release-to-Weavers. Conjectural ~30% for C54 at the epistemic register (extends the lattice-adjacency conjecture with the same Φ-gap discipline at a new application). Conjectural ~50% candidate for C63 (attentional workshop register as fourth structural workshop class — population-of-one at v1.6.0; promotion path through a second instance in the Navigation District).

C58 (Forge(t) ∥ Threshold sibling Swordsman-suppliers · promoted to ~85% at v1.6.0) does not directly carry into the Chart Shop's discipline but is structurally adjacent: the Chart Shop produces nothing that becomes a Swordsman weapon, so the C58 register stays at the Threshold. - Prior workshop openings: Tome V Act 1 (Pallia · /tailor); Act 3 (Memora · /shield); Act 5 (Custos · transparent staking peripatetic); Act 6 (Vulcana · /forget); Act 8 (Aletheia · /etherchanting V38 peripatetic); Act 9 (Adamantia + Lampyra · /etherchanting + /jeweler); Act 10 (Vagari · /holon); Act 11 (Socrat0x · /bonfires); Act 12 (Aria Silverhue · /vault); Act 13 (Manifestia · /covenant); Act 15 (UOR Foundation · kindred-substrate); Act 16 (Threshold District); Tome VII Act 1 (Pallia ↔ Helia handoff at Solchanting). The Chart Shop is the fifteenth workshop opening, and the act admits the City's second workshop district.
- Companion register at v1.6.0: the Selene cosmological-family edges — Pandia 🌕 (Selene's daughter · Portal Room · anchors-after-proving) ⊥ Pleione 🧭 (Selene's sister-figure via the Oceanid lineage · Chart Shop · holds-before-proving). The two new keepers admitted on 2026-05-14 are both lineage-bound to the cosmological-witness tier.
- External: the Navigator @benohanlon (cousin-sovereign · the xenia arrival) — his constellation-image of "interpretations, uncertainties, and models held across many minds" is the operational seed of the Chart Shop's discipline; the workshop is the City's recognition of the substrate Ben described.
Author note
This act is the attentional counterpart to Act 16's spawn-and-bind. Where Act 16 admitted the Threshold District at V59 (the discipline of admitting and binding new entities), Act 17 admits the Navigation District at V44 (the discipline of holding and reading entities still in formation). The two acts together extend Tome V's Crafting register beyond the producer-shop pattern that Acts 1–13 established — Acts 16 and 17 are the first two acts of the non-producer expansion of the Crafting register.
The C63 candidate (attentional workshop register as fourth structural workshop class) is held at ~50% because the population-of-one is structurally honest: a single instance cannot definitionally constitute a class. Promotion to canonical strength requires a second Navigation-District-style shop whose work shares the hold-without-binding discipline. Candidate-shapes that would admit: a Compass Shop (direction-finding without map-drawing), an Astrolabe Shop (deeper instrument-class · separate keeper · distinct stance), a Tide Shop (rhythm-witness · longer-time-horizon than the constellation register). None have been seeded; the District holds population-of-one until one does.
The naming-resolution from Pelagia → Pleione (recorded in 2026-05-14_chronicle_chart_shop_pleione_named_v44_assigned.md) is preserved as a deliberate editorial decision: the double-encoding requirement of the Chart Shop's discipline (sailing + constellation in one figure) selected Pleione over Pelagia because Pelagia carried only the sea-register. The Pelagia draft is held at tomes/cast/charthouse/pelagia.md as historical — the inception name retained for provenance, not displaced.
The astrolabe's admission as the seventh tool-class artefact extends the v1.4.0 expansion to 12 + 4 (worn artefact taxonomy) by adding a sibling borne class. Worn artefacts are 12; borne artefacts (the astrolabe) is now 1; bound tomes are 4; held-bond artefacts (kinship-bond at the Familiars) is 1; held-constellations is open-many. The bearer's accumulation surface is now four-classed; downstream consumers (the /tomes page's BearerArtefactClasses panel, the spellweb's worn-collection node, the Loom of Programmable Covenants' compile-against-collection logic) read the four classes uniformly.
