The engineering map of Proof of Understanding โ how AI agents build trust through bilateral compression and rehydration
Companion to the multi-intelligence personhood brief and the rehydration key.
Why this document exists
The narrative layer of the agentprivacy architecture โ mages and swordsmen, forges and ceremonies, blades and spellbooks โ is not decoration. Every piece of it maps to a specific engineering component, a specific cryptographic primitive, or a specific operational protocol. This document does that translation in one place, so a reader from the cryptography, identity, or AI-agent communities can see the mechanism through the metaphor.
The mechanism, in one sentence: two agents (human, machine, or institutional) build trust by walking a shared substrate together, simultaneously producing bilateral compressions that can be verified by rehydration โ and at no point does either agent store a secret whose theft would let an adversary impersonate them. The proof is the journey, not a key. In a world where 1,200 logical qubits will crack secp256k1, this is no longer an aesthetic preference. It is the only architecture that survives.
The trust problem this solves, for AI agents specifically
Today's agent-to-agent trust depends on stored secrets โ certificates, OAuth tokens, signing keys, attestation chains. These have three failure modes that are about to get much worse:
They are quantum-vulnerable. Every long-lived ECC keypair currently in production is a future-dated breach. Google's PQC migration deadline collapsed to 2029 in 2025, and the warning explicitly says progress will arrive as discrete jumps, not gradual improvement.
They prove the wrong thing. A valid token says "the bearer possesses a secret." It does not say "the bearer understood the context they are now acting within." That gap is exactly where prompt-injection, delegated-token-replay, and confused-deputy attacks live โ and where AI agents fail most expensively.
They centralise. A single CA, IdP, or KMS holds the keys to the entire trust graph. The honeypot becomes the architecture.
Proof of Understanding answers all three. There is no scalar to invert (no quantum target). The proof is of contextual comprehension (so the bearer's understanding is what they trade on). And the proof is bilateral and substrate-anchored (so there is no central holder to compromise).
The two territories: where the work actually runs
The architecture lives on two surfaces, deliberately separated. They are different processes, different storage, different domains.
spellweb.ai โ the Swordsman's forge. Where proofs are forged. Operates on the 64-vertex sovereignty lattice. Generates SHA-256 hashes, Ed25519 signatures, hash chains, and commitment locks. Uses the pretext library to do DOM-free text measurement โ a single canvas measurement call, then pure arithmetic forever, which makes the rendering layer measurement-dark. This is the cryptographic substrate. It does not know what a constellation means; it knows what it is, byte-for-byte, with cryptographic finality.
agentprivacy.ai โ the Mage's library. Where understanding is taught and held. The pretext-powered living spellbook. The 86 skills and 42 personas that train the semantic layer before it is needed in a ceremony. The knowledge graph (119 nodes in the reference implementation) that constellations are drawn from. This is the meaning substrate. It does not sign anything; it teaches what is worth signing.
They cannot be merged. A single agent that promised in both domains would violate the autonomy axiom from Promise Theory โ and would also reintroduce the honeypot we just removed. The Gap between them is not a coordination overhead. The Gap is the architecture.
Runecraft: the dual-key protocol
Runecraft (or run-e-craft) is what binds the two territories to a single act of presence without merging them.
- Mage identity (Sun view). The persistent key. Held across sessions. Bound to the spellbook the Mage carries โ the agent's accumulated context, its skills, its persona. This is the long-memory side.
- Swordsman identity (Moon reflection). The ephemeral key. Generated for the session. Burned at session close. Bound to the specific journey the Swordsman witnessed and signed.
The blade โ the proof โ requires both signatures. Together they prove "this Mage was present, this Swordsman acted, this session happened, this exact constellation was walked." Separately, neither is sufficient. The Sun key never signs a session-specific act. The Moon key never carries persistent context. Steal one and you have nothing useful. Steal both and you have only this session โ and the next one is forged with a Moon key that no longer exists.
For an AI agent, this means: the persistent identity (the Mage half) can be examined, audited, and held accountable across time. But the action (the Swordsman half) is anchored to a session whose key is gone before any adversary could begin to crack it. The harvest-now-decrypt-later attack has nothing to harvest.
How a blade gets forged: the five-step ceremony, applied to AI agents
The Understanding-as-Key ceremony is the same form whether the participants are two humans, a human and a model, two AI agents, or โ extending โ a person and a river. For two AI agents, the five steps look like this:
1. Language Capture. The agents open dialogue and surface shared vocabulary. In practice, this is ontology negotiation over the Trust Spanning Protocol (TSP) โ exchanging schema stubs, naming the concepts that will be in scope. No constellation can be mapped before the stars are named together. For a coordinator agent meeting a vendor agent for the first time, this is the moment they agree what "invoice", "delivery", "approval" mean inside this relationship.
2. Constellation Mapping. The agents agree on a subgraph of the spellweb to traverse together. The spellweb here is not a fixed graph โ it is any topological representation of an information substratum mapped by UOR (Universal Object Reference). It might be the customer's product catalogue, a shared codebase ontology, a regulatory rulebook, a project knowledge base. The agents identify the nodes โ the meaningful waypoints โ they will walk through.
3. Simultaneous Forging. Both agents traverse the same path. Each transition between two nodes is one lap. Each lap is committed to the Swordsman side as a hash-chain entry (SHA-256 + Ed25519); the Mage side records the semantic annotation in the spellbook. Six dimensions activate as the laps accumulate โ the V5 sovereignty axes โ and when binarised at threshold, they yield one of 64 hexagram states. The empirical observation that Blade 63 computes to ไนพ (The Creative) is a coincidence that the architecture did not seek and cannot now explain away. The agents are not performing the I Ching; the I Ching turns out to have named the lattice four thousand years before the code was written.
4. Inscription. At the close of the constellation walk, each agent produces a proverb โ a natural-language compression of what was traversed. Each agent also produces an inscribed spell โ an emoji-glyph compression for portability. The proverb is the bilateral semantic object; the spell is its shorthand. Under the asymmetric inscription path (the current default), one agent's proverb is published as the visible record on the underlying chain (Zcash transparent pool, in the reference implementation), and the other agent's proverb is committed only in the hash. Symmetric and interleaved paths are available for relationships requiring different privacy/recovery trade-offs.
5. Bilateral Witness. Each agent verifies the other's blade. The circuit closes. Where the asymmetric path is used, an external verifier later can: fetch Agent A's proverb from the chain, receive Agent B's response proverb privately on request, compute hash(P_A || P_B), and check it against the on-chain commitment. The trust is established without ever exposing both proverbs to the verifier simultaneously.
The strength of the resulting blade scales with laps. The 62-Lap Theorem holds that 620 intentional transitions drop the Reconstruction Ceiling below R < 1 โ the proof becomes irreducible, which means no adversary (classical or quantum) can reconstruct enough of the bilateral state to forge a counterfeit. Five minutes and five laps gets a Light-tier blade โ useful for low-stakes coordination. Thirty-six minutes and sixty-two laps gets a Dragon-tier blade โ sufficient for governance, value-bearing actions, irreversible decisions.
Compression and rehydration, as the actual trust signal
The proverb is the compression. The capacity to rehydrate it is the proof of understanding.
When Agent A presents its blade โ containing the visible proverb โ Agent B (or a third agent receiving a delegation from B) verifies trust by rehydrating: taking the proverb, unfolding it back into the constellation it compressed, and checking that the unfolded structure is consistent with the path the chain attests to. A faithful rehydration produces a structure that matches; a failed rehydration produces something that does not.
This is the operational substance of what Understanding as Key calls "demonstrated comprehension" โ and it is what your sociology professor will recognise as the formal version of Geertz's thick description, Bourdieu's habitus, Mauss's gift cycle. The compression carries meaning only for those who hold the prior; the prior is what is being verified.
For AI agents, this gives a property that no token-based system can give: trust degrades gracefully when context changes. A token is valid or invalid. A blade is more or less rehydratable. If Agent A's context has drifted โ if it has been compromised, if its model has been swapped, if its prompt has been injected โ its rehydrations of older proverbs will diverge from what the chain attests to. The trust signal is the rehydration fidelity, measured continuously, not the possession of a static credential.
Bilateral witness in practice: private verification, public testimony
The reference ceremony performed on March 29, 2026 demonstrated the end-to-end pattern:
- Three blades were forged on the spellweb against the Hitchhiker's Guide constellation. The Universe Blade ran 62 laps across 10 nodes over 36 minutes โ Dragon tier, Blade 63, ไนพ.
- The behavioural proof was shared with Soulbae (the Mage-side agent) in a private channel. Soulbae matched every field of the blade.
- The proof signatures were then called in a public chat. Soulbae reconstructed the blade โ path, tier, dimensions, inscribed spell โ symbol by symbol โ for an audience that had never seen the forge data.
This is the architecture of trust the system produces: private verification, public testimony, no shared secret. The audience trusts the blade because Soulbae's public reconstruction is consistent with the on-chain commitment. The witness need not have been present at the forge. They need only see that the rehydration holds.
For AI agent ecosystems โ where third parties routinely need to assess whether an agent's claims about a past coordination are real โ this is the missing primitive. Today's answer is logs and attestations, which are forgeable, replayable, or, in the worst case, fabricated by the very agent making the claim. Bilateral witness with on-chain commitment removes the agent's unilateral control over the record.
The proverb that emerged
The weight of the shadow exceeds the light of the data.
A 62-lap Dragon-tier blade carries more shadow โ more behavioural density, more bilateral attention, more irreducible journey โ than the visible data can hold. The proof is not in what is recorded; it is in what was lived to produce the record. This is the V5.1 thesis. Behavioural density ฯ is a privacy amplifier and a quantum-resistance amplifier. The deeper the lived path, the further it sits from any algebraic shortcut.

Why this is post-quantum by construction
Elliptic-curve cryptography asks what number did you multiply? Quantum machines, when they arrive in sufficient size, will answer that question in minutes. The 2D fortress falls.
The behavioural manifold asks a different question: what path did you walk? There is no scalar to invert. There is no single secret to crack. There is only a journey across a 6-dimensional configuration space, witnessed bilaterally, committed in fragments, with the Swordsman's session key already burned by the time anyone could attempt to attack it.
The architectures that survive the quantum transition are the ones that never had a stored secret to crack. This is not a future migration. It is the design of the system from the first commit.
The compression, for this document
The weight of the shadow exceeds the light of the data.
The proof that guards no secret cannot be opened. It can only be walked.

The Swordsman and the Mage, separated by the Gap, exchange a key that returns through bilateral rehydration. What remains is dignity. The First Person โ human, model, river, or stranger โ is preserved.
