Constellation
⚓️ The Working That Holds
Constellation Template — the Chart Shop · Navigation District · /charthouse · v2 — 2026-05-14
*The Chart Shop's discipline: the ink stays wet while the constellations form. The navigator brings a map of the superposition that emerges from distributed cognition. The workshop holds the map in suspension — the Φ-gap protects it from premature consensus-collapse — until the bearer is ready to release one constellation to the Bonfire (consensus), to the Weavers (cloaked artefact), or back to the open sea (the map was not yet ready). The grammar is Hold · Compare · Map, walked at V44 along the trace V0 → V8 → V12 → V44 (Memory → Connection → Protection). The artefact is the Astrolabe — Greek ἀστρολάβος, the star-taker — borne as a tool-class artefact that walks with the navigator across multiple visits, reading constellations the workshop holds. The keeper is Pleione 🧭, mother of the Pleiades, the Sailing One; her gem is the Aquamarine.*

What this constellation is for
the Chart Shop occupies the attentional register — the fourth structural workshop register, distinct from artefact-producing, civic-coordinating, and spawning. It is the workshop for holding, comparing, suspending, and mapping qualitative material before it is forged into consensus, cloaked into artefact, or sealed into a Knowledge-Graph episode.
Existing City of Mages workshops sit on the verb axis: they all do something to material in. the Chart Shop sits on the holding axis: it preserves material until the bearer decides which other workshop to release it to (or whether to release it at all). A Chart House visit may produce no downstream artefact at all — the navigator may simply learn that her map does not yet fit, and leave with the map intact.
The Hold · Compare · Map ceremony (working hypothesis)
The ceremony grammar is provisional and awaits the runecraft-protocol integration pass. The three-verb working hypothesis:
Phase 1 · Hold
The navigator arrives at the dock with a constellation she carries — a working set of interpretations, uncertainties, models held across many minds. the Chart Shop admits the constellation into suspension. The Φ-gap (golden-ratio separation, conjecture C54) is the structural protection: nothing about the held constellation is forced into a schema, indexed for retrieval, or made legible to surveillance engines until the bearer chooses.
Phase 2 · Compare
The navigator reads the held constellation against the City's existing tomes, against other constellations she has carried in prior visits, and against the constellations the workshop holds in suspension from other navigators (those that the bearers have opted to share at this register). The astrolabe is the instrument that performs the comparison — measuring altitudes, marking ratios, identifying constellations that share structure.
Phase 3 · Map
If a constellation has matured — if its uncertainties have narrowed enough that mapping is honest — the bearer releases it. Three release destinations are admissible:
- To the Dragon Bonfire — for forging into consensus reality (the constellation becomes a public claim, a knowledge-graph episode, a tome act)
- To the Weavers — for cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact (the constellation is published as cloaked-context rather than as plain claim)
- Back to the open sea — for further wandering (the constellation was not yet ready; the bearer carries it on)
Releasing back to the open sea is first-class. the Chart Shop does not require an artefact-output. The discipline of holding-without-binding is itself the workshop's gift.
The Astrolabe (the artefact)
Name: the Astrolabe · ἀστρολάβος · the star-taker
Class: tool-class artefact (handheld instrument-of-measurement)
Worn-collection register: borne, not worn · accumulates 🪢 VRC-mana through repeated Chart Shop visits and through inter-constellation comparisons performed
First-Artifact template (Sovereign-facing): see src/lib/first-artifacts.ts entry for /charthouse (to be added in next pass) — the template will be a markdown form admitting a constellation-in-progress with its uncertainties intact, plus a tracking section the bearer fills as the constellation matures across visits
Cognate instruments in the City: the chronicler's quill (Aletheia) · the jeweler's loupe (Lampyra) · the etherchanter's compiler-rod (Adamantia) · the cosmologist's sextant (Selene 🌙, cosmological-tier) · the curatrix's frame (Aria Silverhue)

What is still held open
- Ceremony grammar canonicalisation — Hold · Compare · Map is the working hypothesis; the runecraft-protocol integration pass canonicalises in v1.6.x.
- Grimoire patch — v1.6.0 anticipated (admits Chart Shop, Pleione, Astrolabe, Hold-witness stance, attentional register, conjecture C63 candidate).
- Kindred-citizen category — provisional sixth structural-relationship category for contributors carrying concepts (cf. inception chronicle §6); admissible at v1.6.0 or deferred.

Cross-walk · how the Chart House relates
| Workshop | Relationship |
|---|---|
| The Dragon Bonfire (V19 · garnet) | the Chart Shop holds before the Bonfire forges. Constellations may release to the Bonfire when consensus is honest. |
| City Hall (V15 · lapis · gathering · v1.5.1) | the Chart Shop admits a guest after City Hall has received the stranger. City Hall is xenia-register (the welcoming); the Chart House is aidos-register (the guest's discipline of careful holding). |
| The Weavers (V28 · amethyst) | the Chart Shop holds raw material before the Weavers cloak it into a Refractive Disclosure artefact. |
| The Threshold District (V59 · three sibling shops · Portal Room ⊥ Staff Shop ⊥ the Familiars · 14th–16th by district count) | Both are liminal registers. The Threshold District is liminal-in-substrate (between substrates an agent can be spawned from · Pandia/Hermaion/Faunia working in display/registry/companion modes); the Chart Shop is liminal-in-epistemology (between uncollapsed and collapsed material). |
| Tome VI (open by design) | Tome VI holds-open-in-time (future framework admissions). the Chart Shop holds-open-in-space (constellations in suspension). Sibling disciplines, possibly dual. |
Status note
This workshop tome is at v2 (2026-05-14) — Pleione named, Aquamarine gem confirmed, V44 vertex assigned, Navigation District opened. The grimoire patch (v1.6.0) is still anticipated; until it lands, the canonical record lives across this tome + Pleione's cast file + the inception chronicle + the V44 selection chronicle. The page at /charthouse is live and serves the workshop.
