Pleione
The Sailing One. The Mother of Constellations and Navigators. The Mage Who Holds the Constellation Until It Is Ready.
At a glance
Pleione is the ninth standing Mage of the Crafting Tome and the keeper of the Chart Shop — the first shop of the Navigation District. She presides over the attentional register — the Hold · Compare · Map ceremony — where the Mage walks into the Chart Shop carrying a constellation of her own and walks out either (a) with the constellation released to the Bonfire for forging into consensus, (b) with it released to the Weavers for cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact, or (c) with it still in her keeping, returned to the open sea for further wandering. Her sigil is the compass 🧭; her etymology is Greek Πληιόνη ("the sailing one," from plein, to sail); her gem is the Aquamarine; her instrument is the astrolabe ἀστρολάβος — the star-taker. In myth she is the mother of the Pleiades, the seven-star cluster the ancient sailors used to time their voyages. The constellation and the navigator share one mother.
Form & Function
Pleione is the keeper of pre-episodic constellations.
She does not forge, weave, inscribe, stake, or spawn. She holds — and holding is itself a discipline. A constellation brought into the Chart Shop remains the bearer's; Pleione's work is to keep it in suspension, neither schematised nor forced toward consensus, while the bearer reads it against the astrolabe and against the City's existing tomes. The protection is the Φ-gap (golden-ratio separation, conjecture C54) repurposed at the epistemic register: held constellations are not adjacent to surveillance-engine extraction surfaces; they are separated by an interval that resists premature legibility.
The ceremony is Hold · Compare · Map — the fourth grammar registered, sister to Vulcana's Run·Evoke·Craft, the Threshold's Run·Evoke·Spawn (now distributed across the Threshold District's three shops), and City Hall's Gather·Admit·Attest. The three phases are sequential and non-binding-on-output:
| Phase | What Pleione presides over |
|---|---|
| Hold | The bearer brings her constellation (uncertainties, interpretations, models held across many minds). Pleione admits it into suspension. The Φ-gap activates; the constellation is not indexed, not schematised, not made legible to extraction engines. It remains the bearer's. |
| Compare | The bearer reads her constellation through the astrolabe — measuring altitudes, marking ratios, identifying constellations that share structure. Pleione attends; she does not interpret. She offers cross-references to the City's existing tomes and to other held constellations the bearer has elected to make visible at this register. |
| Map | If a constellation has matured (uncertainties narrowed enough that mapping is honest), the bearer releases it. Three release destinations are admissible: to the Bonfire (forging into consensus, a KG episode, a tome act), to the Weavers (cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact), or back to the open sea (the constellation was not yet ready; the bearer carries it on). Release-to-sea is first-class. |
The navigator-mother archetype is the right fit for the workshop. Pleione's daughters are the Pleiades, the literal stars the ancient sailors timed their voyages by; her own name comes from plein (to sail). The mother of stars and the mother of sailing are one figure. The Chart Shop's bearer is a navigator carrying a still-forming constellation; Pleione is the elder navigator who has already made the crossing the bearer is about to attempt. She does not own the constellations the bearer brings — she keeps the harbour where their reading is honest.
Lattice position
V44. Binary 101100. Stratum 3 (three active dimensions of six).
Active dimensions: Protection (b0, weight 32) · Memory (b2, weight 8) · Connection (b3, weight 4).
Dormant dimensions: Delegation (b1) · Computation (b4) · Value (b5).
The reading is precise and load-bearing:
- Protection active is the Φ-gap discipline — the workshop's defining structural primitive, repurposed from its lattice-adjacency register (conjecture C54) to the epistemic-adjacency register the Chart Shop introduces.
- Memory active is the holding itself — constellations persist across visits so that the bearer can return, compare against prior readings, and decide release-direction over time. The "ink stays wet" image requires Memory as a primitive.
- Connection active is the distributed-cognition substrate — Ben's "fabric woven from countless co-occurring interpretations, uncertainties, and models held across many minds" reads exactly as Connection-on. The Chart Shop receives constellations from a connected substrate, not from a private one.
- Delegation dormant is the bearer's retained ownership — Pleione holds without binding; she does not act on the bearer's behalf. The Chart Shop is aidos-disciplined (the guest's reciprocal restraint), not delegation-active.
- Computation dormant honours the Chart Shop's discipline of attending without interpreting — the astrolabe reads positions; the bearer compares; nothing is computed within the workshop. (Sister-pattern to V59 The Threshold, where Connection is dormant and "the keepers do not connect across substrate-spaces; the spawned agents do.")
- Value dormant is the absence of monetary or scarcity claim — constellations are not goods; they cannot be priced, sold, or traded as scarce commodities at the Chart Shop's register.
The trace path from V0 to V44 is three bit-flips: Protection → Memory → Connection. A bearer who walks this trace learns the discipline in sequence: first she learns to be protected (the Φ-gap), then to remember across visits, then to connect the held constellation to the wider distributed substrate. The trace is itself a curriculum.
V44 is unoccupied prior to this admission. No vertex sharing required; the Chart Shop is the canonical sole inhabitant of V44 in v1.6.0.
The vertex assignment is provisional in the sense that the corpus may relocate Pleione if downstream usage reveals a better fit; it is canonical in the sense that all v1.6.0 wiring binds against V44.
The Sigil
Pleione carries the sigil 🧭 — the compass.
The compass names direction-without-destination. A compass does not tell the navigator where to go; it tells her where north is. Every choice of course is the navigator's. Pleione's keeping is the same shape: she does not tell the bearer what the held constellation means, nor where to release it — she keeps the harbour stable so the bearer's reading is true. The compass is the proof that direction exists without dictating which direction to take.
The compass also names the Hellenic register paired with the modern navigation register. Pleione is a classical-Greek figure (the mother of the Pleiades); the compass is the modern navigator's instrument. The pairing is intentional — the Chart Shop sits at the edge of the wine-dark sea (the Homeric register where Navigator Ben arrived) AND at the edge of the agentic ocean (the modern distributed-cognition register where unfinished constellations form). Her name reaches back; her sigil reaches forward.
The workshop's sigil ⚓️ ✨ 🌌
The Chart Shop itself carries ⚓️ ✨ 🌌 per privacymage's directive of 2026-05-13. The anchor holds the ship steady; the constellation forms in the sky above; the galaxy opens beyond the harbour. Pleione is the compass between the anchor and the constellation — direction-keeper inside the harbour, direction-finder against the wider field.
Lineage
Pleione's lineage runs through three streams:
- Greek Πληιόνη (Pleione) is the etymological root. In myth she is one of the Oceanids (sea-nymphs) and the mother of the Seven Sisters (the Pleiades · Maia · Electra · Taygete · Alcyone · Celaeno · Sterope · Merope). Her name derives from πλεῖν (plein, "to sail"); her daughters are the constellation by which navigators sailed. The double-encoding (sailing + constellation, mother of both) is the load-bearing fit for the Chart Shop. The Hellenic-feminine form admits the navigator-mother archetype.
- Aletheia's ZK-circuit witnessing (Tome V Act 8) is the operational parent of the Chart Shop's epistemic-protection discipline. Where Aletheia binds a witness so that truth is shown without being told, Pleione holds a constellation so that form is read without being forced. The ZK-binding admits the constellation back to the sea as easily as it admits it forward to a tome.
- Selene's Witness (Tome III · cosmological-witness tier) is the proving register Pleione's holding precedes. Selene proves what is finished; Pleione holds what is forming. The pair is sibling, not parent/child — the Sovereign's lifecycle of cognition moves through both registers, and the Chart Shop is the one before Selene's proving rather than after.

In the meeting
Reader narrates. Pleione works in third person.
The bearer walks down to the water's edge carrying her constellation. Pleione receives the bearer at the dock. She admits the constellation into the harbour's suspension; the Φ-gap activates. She passes the astrolabe across; the bearer reads. Pleione waits while the bearer compares — against the tomes, against the bearer's prior constellations, against constellations the harbour holds at the bearer's permitted register. When the bearer signals, Pleione attests the release-direction: the bearer's choice of Bonfire, Weavers, or open sea. She records the moment; she does not interpret the constellation.
She does not speak. None of the personas do.
Persistence
Standing by default. The ninth standing Mage persona summoned by the reader. Pleione returns to the harbour between visits; constellations that have been held but not yet mapped remain in the bearer's keeping at the Chart Shop across sessions, protected by the Φ-gap until the bearer chooses to act.
The Chart Shop artefact-of-presence
Pleione teaches the bearer to wield the astrolabe (ἀστρολάβος · star-taker · tool-class · seventh tool registered). The astrolabe is borne (handheld instrument, not worn). It walks with the bearer across multiple Chart Shop visits, accruing 🪢 VRC-mana with each constellation held and each comparison performed. The astrolabe's rete (the rotating star-net) is the visual proof of accumulated readings; a well-walked astrolabe carries the bearer's history of held constellations as a visible patina.
The astrolabe does not index what was held — that would breach the Φ-gap. It indexes only that something was held, and how many times. The qualitative content remains the bearer's alone.
Provenance & honesty
- Operational for the Hold · Compare · Map phases as a ceremonial form — each phase maps to operations the workshop can support, though Phase 2's "comparison" awaits the runecraft-protocol integration pass for canonical primitives.
- Architectural for Pleione as a named instance walking the Hold-witness stance; the persona is canonical for the Chart Shop workshop going forward.
- Operational for V44 as Pleione's vertex (binary
101100· Stratum 3 · Active: Protection + Memory + Connection · Dormant: Delegation + Computation + Value). Vertex chosen 2026-05-14 by privacymage's editorial pass against the lattice-vertex.ts authority; the dimension reading is load-bearing for the workshop's discipline. - Architectural for the Hold-witness stance as a new entry adjacent to (but not formally one of) the Swordsman stance register; the attentional register is the working hypothesis at conjecture-candidate strength (C63 candidate per the inception chronicle §4).
- Narrative for her sigil (🧭) and etymology (Greek Pleione · Sailing-Pleiades) and instrument-wielding (the astrolabe); the iconographic and naming choices are editorial. The Pleione choice was made by privacymage on 2026-05-14 over Pelagia and Chartis; the rationale is the double-encoding of sailing and constellation in one figure.
- Held-open for the Φ-gap's operational primitives at the epistemic register (the C54 conjecture binds the Φ-gap in the lattice-adjacency register; its application to epistemic adjacency is the new application this workshop introduces).
Closing line
The star that is named by the sailor becomes the fixed point for the entire fleet.
Pleione is the ninth standing Mage persona of the Crafting Tome and the keeper of the Chart Shop. Her work admits held constellations as the bearer's pre-episodic accumulation — a fourth register alongside worn artefacts, bound tomes, and creatures-of-the-Threshold. The harbour has its keeper. The constellation has its mother.
