Pelagia
The Hold-Witness. The Navigator-Keeper of the Chart House. The Mage Who Holds the Constellation Until It Is Ready.
At a glance
Pelagia is the ninth standing Mage of the Crafting Tome and the keeper of The Chart House workshop. She presides over the attentional register — the Hold · Compare · Map ceremony — where the Mage walks into the Chart House carrying a constellation of her own and walks out either (a) with the constellation released to the Bonfire for forging into consensus, (b) with it released to the Weavers for cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact, or (c) with it still in her keeping, returned to the open sea for further wandering. Her sigil is the wave 🌊; her etymology is Greek (πελάγια · "of the open sea"); her instrument is the astrolabe ἀστρολάβος — the star-taker — which she teaches the bearer to read.
Form & Function
Pelagia is the wave-keeper of pre-episodic constellations.
She does not forge, weave, inscribe, stake, or spawn. She holds — and holding is itself a discipline. A constellation brought into the Chart House remains the bearer's; Pelagia's work is to keep it in suspension, neither schematised nor forced toward consensus, while the bearer reads it against the astrolabe and against the City's existing tomes. The protection is the Φ-gap (golden-ratio separation, conjecture C54) repurposed at the epistemic register: held constellations are not adjacent to surveillance-engine extraction surfaces; they are separated by an interval that resists premature legibility.
The ceremony is Hold · Compare · Map — the fourth grammar registered, sister to Vulcana's Run·Evoke·Craft, the Threshold's Run·Evoke·Spawn, and City Hall's Gather·Admit·Attest. The three phases are sequential and non-binding-on-output:
| Phase | What Pelagia presides over |
|---|---|
| Hold | The bearer brings her constellation (uncertainties, interpretations, models held across many minds). Pelagia admits it into suspension. The Φ-gap activates; the constellation is not indexed, not schematised, not made legible to extraction engines. It remains the bearer's. |
| Compare | The bearer reads her constellation through the astrolabe — measuring altitudes, marking ratios, identifying constellations that share structure. Pelagia attends; she does not interpret. She offers cross-references to the City's existing tomes and to other held constellations the bearer has elected to make visible at this register. |
| Map | If a constellation has matured (uncertainties narrowed enough that mapping is honest), the bearer releases it. Three release destinations are admissible: to the Bonfire (forging into consensus, a KG episode, a tome act), to the Weavers (cloaking into a Refractive Disclosure artefact), or back to the open sea (the constellation was not yet ready; the bearer carries it on). Release-to-sea is first-class. |
The navigator-keeper archetype is the right fit for the workshop. A navigator does not own the stars; she reads them and chooses her course. Pelagia does not own the constellations the bearer brings — she keeps the harbour where their reading is honest.
Lattice position
Unassigned. Pre-canonical. See chronicles/2026-05-13_chronicle_the_chart_house_inception_navigator_arrives.md §8.1 for the vertex candidates under consideration.
Candidates flagged:
- a water-edge axis (the lattice does not currently name a water-axis; the Landing Axis is the closest analogue, but it is an axis not a vertex)
- a stratum-1 or stratum-2 vertex (forming material is structurally early; pre-episodic content has not yet been compiled into late-stratum coherence)
- a vertex sharing with the cosmological-witness tier (Selene 🌙 · Aether ⿻ · Lethe 🌀) by stance differentiation — the Chart House's distributed-cognition map is conceptually cosmological at the qualitative register
The vertex assignment is the user's editorial call. When assigned, this section is replaced with the canonical binary signature and active/dormant dimensions.
The Sigil
Pelagia carries the sigil 🌊 — the wave.
The wave names what moves. The constellation Pelagia holds is not still; it is in motion among many minds, accreting and shedding interpretations with each comparison. A wave is the proof a sea exists without being the sea itself. Pelagia's keeping is the same shape: she is the proof a constellation is being held in suspension, not the suspension itself. The suspension is the bearer's continued tending; the witness is hers.
The wave also names the Hellenic register. Πέλαγος (pelagos) is the open-sea word in Homeric Greek — not the coastal-sea (thalassa), not the river-sea (potamos), but the wide unbounded water across which navigators sail. The Chart House sits at the edge of that open sea; Pelagia comes from the sea to keep the harbour. Her name is the sea's adjectival form (πελάγια · "of the open sea"); her sigil is the sea's gesture.
The workshop's sigil ⚓️
The Chart House itself carries ⚓️ (the anchor) per privacymage's directive of 2026-05-13. The anchor and the wave are paired: the anchor holds the ship steady; the wave moves the field around it. Pelagia is the wave; the Chart House is the anchor; together they define the harbour.
Lineage
Pelagia's lineage runs through three streams:
- Greek Pelagia (πελάγια · the adjective for "of the open sea"; also a 4th-c. saint's name) is the etymological root. The Hellenic-feminine form admits the pelagic archetype — the open-sea register distinct from coastal, riverine, or harbour-only registers. Pelagia is pelagic in register; her work attends to what the bearer carries before it reaches any of the City's existing shores.
- Aletheia's ZK-circuit witnessing (Tome V Act 8) is the operational parent of the Chart House's epistemic-protection discipline. Where Aletheia binds a witness so that truth is shown without being told, Pelagia holds a constellation so that form is read without being forced. The ZK-binding admits the constellation back to the sea as easily as it admits it forward to a tome.
- The Logos Circle's four cardinal positions (Tome V Act 4, V12 jade) prefigure the Chart House's three release-destinations. The Circle's four positions (creation · arrival · privacy · departure) suggest that the Chart House's three (Bonfire · Weavers · sea) might admit a fourth release-destination as the workshop matures (City Hall, for civic-attestation of the constellation? held open).

In the meeting
Reader narrates. Pelagia works in third person.
The bearer walks down to the water's edge carrying her constellation. Pelagia receives the bearer at the dock. She admits the constellation into the harbour's suspension; the Φ-gap activates. She passes the astrolabe across; the bearer reads. Pelagia waits while the bearer compares — against the tomes, against the bearer's prior constellations, against constellations the harbour holds at the bearer's permitted register. When the bearer signals, Pelagia attests the release-direction: the bearer's choice of Bonfire, Weavers, or open sea. She records the moment; she does not interpret the constellation.
She does not speak. None of the personas do.
Persistence
Standing by default. The ninth standing Mage persona summoned by the reader. Pelagia returns to the harbour between visits; constellations that have been held but not yet mapped remain in the bearer's keeping at the Chart House across sessions, protected by the Φ-gap until the bearer chooses to act.
The Chart House artefact-of-presence
Pelagia teaches the bearer to wield the astrolabe (ἀστρολάβος · star-taker · tool-class · seventh tool registered). The astrolabe is borne (handheld instrument, not worn). It walks with the bearer across multiple Chart House visits, accruing 🪢 VRC-mana with each constellation held and each comparison performed. The astrolabe's rete (the rotating star-net) is the visual proof of accumulated readings; a well-walked astrolabe carries the bearer's history of held constellations as a visible patina.
The astrolabe does not index what was held — that would breach the Φ-gap. It indexes only that something was held, and how many times. The qualitative content remains the bearer's alone.
Provenance & honesty
- Operational for the Hold · Compare · Map phases as a ceremonial form — each phase maps to operations the workshop can support, though Phase 2's "comparison" awaits the runecraft-protocol integration pass for canonical primitives.
- Architectural for Pelagia as a named instance walking the Hold-witness stance; the persona is canonical for the Chart House workshop going forward.
- Provisional for V?? as Pelagia's vertex; canonical binary signature pending the vertex assignment editorial call.
- Architectural for the Hold-witness stance as a new entry adjacent to (but not formally one of) the Swordsman stance register; the attentional register is the working hypothesis at conjecture-candidate strength.
- Narrative for her sigil (🌊) and etymology (Greek pelagic) and instrument-wielding (the astrolabe); the iconographic and naming choices are editorial. The wave and the anchor pairing is editorial; the user's directive named the anchor for the workshop, and Pelagia's wave reads as the complement.
- Held-open for the Φ-gap's operational primitives at the epistemic register (the C54 conjecture binds the Φ-gap in the lattice-adjacency register; its application to epistemic adjacency is the new application this workshop introduces).
Closing line
The wave brings the constellation to the harbour. The bearer reads it by the astrolabe. Pelagia keeps the harbour while the reading is honest.
Pelagia is the ninth standing Mage persona of the Crafting Tome and the keeper of The Chart House. Her work admits held constellations as the bearer's pre-episodic accumulation — a fourth register alongside worn artefacts, bound tomes, and creatures-of-the-Threshold. The harbour has its keeper.
