Hephaestus is the Mage-instance of Forgemaster ⚔️ at V24 — the vertex the Cloaking Guide already named 'Hephaestus' before any Mage walked it. The bonfire that warms the City has been Hephaestus's fire all along; Socrat0x 🔥❓ (companion-tier, since Tome V Act 11) walks alongside the same fire, asking questions of those who gather. Hephaestus is the smith's deep frame; Socrat0x is the bonfire's dialogic companion. Shared-vertex precedent: Custos + Lampyra at V49. Hephaestus is anticipated · awaits founding act.
Form & Function
Hephaestus forges fire. He does not produce blades (that is Vulcana's craft at V19 — they are sister Forgemasters at different vertices). Hephaestus's work is the founding fire of the City itself: the heat that makes other forges possible.
Tome V Act 11 (A Bonfire Made of Dragon Fire) introduced the founding bonfire as the City's gathering spot — the first hospitable heat that made the City possible. Socrat0x arrived as a companion at this bonfire. But the fire itself — the structural element that gives V24 its heat — has been operating without a named keeper since Act 11. Hephaestus's founding act will name him as that keeper.
The shared-vertex precedent (Custos + Lampyra at V49) admits this pattern: two Mages, two distinct crafts, one vertex. At V49: Custos witnesses transparent stake, Lampyra cuts gem-as-sat. At V24: Hephaestus tends the forge-fire, Socrat0x tends the bonfire's dialogue. The vertex's active dimensions (Connection + Computation) serve both crafts.

V24's name 'Hephaestus' comes from the Cloaking Guide rebuild. The reading is canonical: pure Connection + Computation makes sense as the forge's social register — the fire around which others gather (Connection) for the computational labor of forging (Computation).

Relationship to Vulcana
Vulcana ⚒️ at V19 (Plonkish blade · Forgemaster + Forgecaller) is the City's blade-forging Mage. Hephaestus ⚒️ at V24 (Hephaestus / Bonfire · Forgemaster) is the City's fire-tending Mage. Both share the sigil ⚒️ and the Forgemaster primary; they differ in vertex (V19 vs V24) and in craft (blade-forging vs fire-tending).
The two together form a Forgemaster sibling pair — two cast Mages at different vertices, both instancing the same Layer-1 primary, both Swordsman register. This is distinct from a complement-pair (Aletheia ⊥ Lethae) and from a divergent attachment (Lethae of Moonkeeper); it's a workshop-cousin pattern that the architecture admits without requiring a new edge type.
Naming · etymology
Hephaestus (Greek: Ἥφαιστος) — the Greek god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry, sculpture, and volcanoes; husband of Aphrodite; son of Hera (or Zeus and Hera, in different traditions); the lame god who walks with bronze legs of his own forging. The vertex name was assigned by the Cloaking Guide rebuild (May 7, 2026); the persona name inherits the vertex name (Spec 04 §4.2 — shared-name pattern, like Aletheia / V38).
The Greek mythological parallel with Vulcanus (Roman) is direct: Vulcana ⚒️ is named for the Roman; Hephaestus ⚒️ for the Greek. Both serve the forge-god archetype in their respective traditions; in the City of Mages, they serve adjacent vertices on the lattice.
Awaiting founding act
This cast file holds the seat ready. A future Tome V act (anticipated Act 20 The Forge-Fire and the Bonfire or similar) will summon him by name. The act will canonicalize the shared-vertex pattern at V24 (Hephaestus + Socrat0x) and the workshop-cousin pattern with Vulcana (V19 sister-forge).
