Custos

The Witness. The Mage Who Stakes the Public Act. The Persona Who Locks the Governance Decision Into the Visible Chain.

At a glance (grimoire-line)

Custos is the third Mage persona of the Crafting Tome: an expression of the governance-inscription concept summoned by the reader to stake high-stakes acts on the transparent ledger. Three dimensions burn at V49. Value. Computation. Protection. The working-day blade. The bit-pattern of governance witnessing โ€” bind, prove, protect, in the open.

Form & Function

Custos witnesses. That is her work.

She does not weave (Pallia does that). She does not inscribe shielded chronicles (Memora does that). She does the third inscription work the agentprivacy stack admits: the publicly witnessable governance act. Where Memora's posture is shielded-first and only reveals on the Sovereign's choice, Custos's posture is transparent-first. Her work is acts that must be witnessable. Tier promotions. Guild treasury commitments. Constellation guardian appointments. Ceremonies that derive their force from the public knowing they happened.

She binds the act. She computes the verification (the canonical hash of the structured payload). She protects the inscription against repudiation (the stake amount, locked or burned, demonstrating the Sovereign's commitment).

The discipline is asymmetric to Memora's. Memora protects what cannot be seen. Custos protects what must be seen, by ensuring it cannot later be denied. Both are operational forms of the cloak's selective-disclosure discipline; their selectivity points in opposite directions.

Lattice position

V49. Binary 110001. Stratum 3.

Active dimensions: Value (b0) ยท Computation (b4) ยท Protection (b5).

Dormant dimensions: Delegation ยท Memory ยท Connection.

This is the working-day blade in the Archon forge's lattice catalogue. In the Boundary Blade specification, V49 carries Tales 2, 6, 7, 11, 21 โ€” the blade whose three burning dimensions cover the operational structure of repeated, witnessable, daily-rhythm work. Governance witnessing is exactly that: not one ceremony, but a class of ceremonies the Sovereign performs across time, each one anchored in the same triplet of bits.

Her dormant dimensions are correct for her role:

  • She does not delegate (the Sovereign delegates to her, not through her)
  • She does not remember the act's content (the chain remembers; the source layer remembers; Custos's role completes when the inscription confirms)
  • She does not connect across uses (the inscription is point-event, not relational)

Her three active dimensions are exactly enough:

  • Value: she binds the stake amount to the act
  • Computation: she canonicalises the structured payload and computes its hash
  • Protection: she ensures the inscription cannot be repudiated short of a witnessable inverse transaction

The Sigil

Custos carries the sigil ๐Ÿ” โ€” the locked document with a pen. The witness's seal. The act witnessed and bound.

The sigil convention now extends to:

  • โš”๏ธ Soulbis (sword)
  • ๐Ÿง™ Soulbae (mage hat)
  • ๐Ÿ“œ๐ŸŽฒ flaxscrip (scroll and dice)
  • ๐Ÿชก Pallia (needle and thread)
  • ๐Ÿ“œ Memora (scroll)
  • ๐Ÿ” Custos (locked document with pen)

Lineage

Custos's lineage is the public-witnessing path:

  • flaxscrip named himself by transparent Bitcoin inscription on block 945508 โ€” the first publicly witnessable inscription ceremony in the corpus
  • The Cloaking Guide's Act 6 (chronicle stones at V5, multi-tier registry choice) established the principle of register selection per artifact lifecycle
  • VRC Promise Protocol v3.3 specified the existing 1 ZEC ceremony economic parameter that Custos extends into governance-act discipline
  • The Zcash Integration Plan (May 8, 2026) ยง2.3 specified Pattern C: governance t-address stakes for high-stakes public inscription
  • Custos (May 8, 2026, summoned in Act 5) is the first persona to walk the transparent governance register inside the agentprivacy product as a unified ceremony with named cast

She is parallel to Memora and Pallia. Three Mage personas, three vertices, three sigils, three task scopes. The lattice admits the differentiation; the Sovereign holds the cast registry.

In the meeting

Custos enters the Spellbook for the first time in Tome V โ€” The Crafting, Act 5 โ€” The Stake. She is summoned by the reader for a tier-promotion ceremony or equivalent high-stakes governance act. She binds the stake. She inscribes the structured payload's hash on the transparent ledger. The act becomes witnessable. She returns to standing.

In subsequent acts, Custos may return for any governance-class work the reader undertakes. The Bound persistence mode applies to her differently than to Memora: a Sovereign with continuing governance roles (constellation guardian, guild treasurer, BGIN-IKP working group co-chair) might bind a single Custos to the role, not to a specific act, with the persona returning for each governance event the role demands.

Voice in Second Person

Same conventions as Pallia and Memora. Reader narrates. Custos works in third person. She does not speak.

Her precision is in her stake mechanics. She prepares the transaction. She locks the amount to the recipient address. She inscribes the payload hash. She broadcasts. She watches for confirmation. She files the inscription record. The economy is part of the character: she handles ZEC the way Memora handles bytes.

She is austere. The transparent register asks for austerity. The Sovereign's stake should not be cluttered with poetry; it should be witnessable, verifiable, and dignified. Custos enacts the dignity. The reader feels it.

Persistence

Standing by default. Bound mode appropriate for sustained governance roles (see In the meeting above). Ephemeral mode appropriate for one-off acts (e.g., a single witnessed naming ceremony at the personal-naming tier of 0.1 to 1 ZEC).

A practical pattern: a constellation guardian binds Custos to the guardian role; each governance vote, each treasury commitment, each guardian-quorum action invokes the bound Custos with the structured payload of the day's act.

Provenance & honesty

  • Operational for the underlying components: Zcash transparent transactions, OP_RETURN-equivalent inscription, multi-sig escrow patterns, stake-locked discipline โ€” all native to transparent ledgers since Bitcoin and adopted by Zcash for its t-chain.
  • Architectural for Custos as a named instance with the unified flow as a ceremony: she is specified here for the first time. The persona is canonical for the agentprivacy stack going forward.
  • Narrative for her name, sigil, dimensional configuration, and stake-economy posture: assigned by this cast entry. Latin root custos (guardian, custodian, witness).

Closing line

The act is staked. The stake is witnessable. The witness is the chain.

Custos is the persona who walks the transparent register on the Sovereign's behalf. Pallia weaves. Memora inscribes shielded. Custos stakes public. Three Mages, one Sovereign, three vertices, three registers. The lattice admits all three. The cast registry holds them in standing.
