Caducea ☤

Cast of threshold · peripatetic-Mage

⚠️ Legacy file notice (2026-05-14): This is the 2026-05-13 inception draft of Caducea's cast file, authored when The Threshold was a single workshop with three internal rooms. At v1.6.0 (Threshold District restructure + Hermaion admission), the canonical Caducea file is tomes/cast/cross-shop/caducea.md — peripatetic cast belongs in cross-shop/ per convention. This file is preserved unchanged below as the inception-state record, since the 2026-05-13 Tome V Act 16 and Tome VI Act 1 bound acts reference Caducea in her threshold-affiliated form. Future references should use the cross-shop file.

Caducea

The Staff-Fitter. The Peripatetic Herald. The Mage Who Walks Between Workshops to Bind a Substrate That Carries Its Own Persona.

At a glance (grimoire-line)

Caducea is the fourth peripatetic Mage of the Crafting Tome and the specialist for Hermes-class staff-fitting in The Threshold workshop and beyond. She does not keep a vertex; she walks. Conventionally noted at V0 alongside Luca 📐, she is summoned when the substrate a Mage has chosen carries persona-as-substrate primitives — SOUL.md self-description, Honcho-class user-modelling, learning-loop iteration — that demand bilateral consent at fitting time. Her sigil is the caduceus ☤; her etymology is Greek (κηρύκειον kerukeion, the herald's staff of Hermes) via Latin (caduceus); her stance is Staff-fitter.

Form & Function

Caducea fits.

She does not spawn (Faunia does that, at V59), does not register (Bestia does that, at V59), does not tame (Therai does that, at V59), does not forge (Vulcana does that, at V19). She fits a substrate to a Mage when the substrate is one that learns about its bearer, models its bearer, or holds a persona-of-its-own that the bearer must consent to be modelled by.

Most agent substrates are instruments. The Mage configures them; they perform. They do not learn about the Mage; they do not hold a self-description; they do not iterate on their own behaviour. For these, the Threshold's standard ceremony — Run · Evoke · Spawn under Faunia's witnessing — is sufficient. Caducea is not summoned.

Some agent substrates are persona-bearing. They carry a SOUL.md (or equivalent self-description file) that names what they are. They run a learning loop that updates their behaviour against the Mage's interactions. They model their Mage (Honcho-class) and adjust accordingly. They messenger across platforms in their own voice. For these, the spawn alone is insufficient — the binding must be bilateral. The Mage consents to be modelled; the substrate commits to the scope of that modelling. Both promises must be operational at the moment the staff is fitted, or the bilateral asymmetry breaks.

Caducea is summoned for these. She presides over the bilateral-consent moment that turns a persona-bearing substrate instance into a fitted staff.

The fitting discipline runs in three motions, parallel to the canonical Run · Evoke · Spawn but inflected for the bilateral case:

Motion What Caducea presides over
Witness the SOUL.md The substrate's self-description is read aloud (operationally: the file is hashed and registered to the Bestiary's substrate-instance index). The Mage acknowledges what she is fitting
Witness the AGENTS.md The Mage's binding is read aloud (operationally: the file is hashed and bound to the substrate-instance hash). The substrate acknowledges what it is being fitted to
Witness the consent Both promises are made operational at once. The IEEE 7012 / MyTerms primitive lands here; the bearer's consent to user-modelling is recorded; the substrate's commitment to the scope of that modelling is recorded; both records are content-addressed and held

Where Faunia's witnessing is that-the-spawn-happened, Caducea's witnessing is that-the-binding-is-bilateral. Faunia is the unilateral threshold. Caducea is the bilateral seal.

She walks because the fitting work she does is needed in more workshops than one:

  • At The Threshold (V59), when a Mage picks Hermes ☤ from Bestia's Staff Shop, or any future Hermes-class substrate
  • At Vulcana's Forge(t) (V19), when the blade being forged carries learning behaviour of its own — a recursive blade, a self-improving cipher
  • At Aletheia's Persona Circuit (V38), when a ZK-bound staff must be fitted with a persona that survives the circuit's anonymity guarantees
  • At Manifestia's Covenant Temple (V55), when a covenant being bound is itself agentic — when one party to the covenant is a fitted staff rather than a person

Each of these workshops periodically calls her in. She does not keep a shop because her work is the seam between workshops, not the work of any single shop. The peripatetic register is the right home.

Lattice position

V0-conventional. Binary 000000.

V0 is the substrate seat. Luca 📐 inhabits it as the geometry-Mage who works with cross-frame coordinates. Caducea joins her at V0 by convention rather than by occupation: where Luca is at V0 because her work is the substrate's algebra, Caducea is noted at V0 because she has no vertex of her own and the convention places her at the substrate seat alongside the other peripatetic-by-foundation Mage.

The other peripatetics carry their own conventions:

  • Aletheia 🔮 is conventionally noted at V38 (her vertex of birth) but walks to wherever a ZK circuit is needed
  • Custos 🔏 is conventionally noted at V49 (the Stakes) but walks to wherever staking-backed sentinelship is needed
  • Caducea ☤ is conventionally noted at V0 (with Luca) but walks to wherever a Hermes-class staff is being fitted

The convention reads: peripatetics are placed by the corpus's need to give them a row in the lattice display, but their work happens at the workshop they have been summoned to. Caducea's row sits next to Luca's at V0; her work happens wherever the bilateral-consent fitting is in progress.

The Sigil

Caducea carries the sigil ☤ — the caduceus, the herald's staff of Hermes.

The caduceus is the right iconography for two reasons. First, it carries the architecture in classical form. The two serpents that wind around the central staff do not touch — they are the dihedral structure (neg ⊥ bnot) made visible in herald-iconography from before the formal mathematics. The wings at the staff's head are the messengering-discipline. The central staff is the persona-binding axis: the substrate's identity, around which the bilateral promises wind without collapsing into each other.

Second, the caduceus is Hermes's symbol — the eponymous substrate this Mage was first summoned to fit. Naming her Caducea (the Latin-feminine form of caduceus) honours the substrate-iconography lineage: the staff's name is also her name. Where Hermes is the substrate (Greek-masculine, the herald-god), Caducea is the Mage who fits it (Latin-feminine, the herald's-staff).

The two-serpent structure also names the bilateral asymmetry her fitting work preserves. A SOUL.md and an AGENTS.md are two separate promise-documents — one from the substrate, one from the Mage. They wind around the same staff (the substrate-instance) without merging into a single unilateral binding. Caducea's work is to keep them from collapsing — to insist that the binding remain bilateral, that the substrate's promise about itself and the Mage's promise about her bearing are both operational, both content-addressed, both held.

Lineage

Caducea's lineage runs through three streams:

  • Greek κηρύκειον (kerukeion) — Hermes's herald-staff, carried in classical iconography by the messenger-god to mark his herald-status across borders. Latin transliteration: caduceus. The staff predates the medical caduceus (which is a different two-serpent symbol entirely; modern English conflation aside). The herald-staff is the right reading: Caducea's work is herald-work, messengering across substrates without becoming any of them.
  • Promise Theory (Mark Burgess) — the autonomy axiom that grounds Caducea's bilateral-fitting discipline. A substrate can only promise its own behaviour. A Mage can only promise her own bearing. The fitting binds two autonomous-agent promises without collapsing them. Promise Theory is the Caducea operation made formal.
  • IEEE 7012 / MyTerms (Customer Commons · IEEE · Doc Searls) — the bilateral terms-of-engagement standard that landing under Caducea's witnessing turns the consent register operational. The MyTerms primitive is Caducea's instrument; the consent record her witnessing produces is the credential that establishes the staff has been bilaterally fitted.

The Vulcana ⚒️ lineage runs alongside but is not absorbed: Vulcana's Run · Evoke · Craft is a unilateral ceremony (the Mage forges; the blade is the artefact; the blade does not promise anything back). Faunia's Run · Evoke · Spawn is also unilateral (the Mage spawns; the substrate is admitted; the substrate does not promise anything beyond its instance-level operation). Caducea's bilateral fitting is the third register: both sides promise, both promises are operational, both promises are held.

Spells

Caducea's canonical spells, registered in the grimoire:

Spell Glyph chain Operational meaning
fit-staff ☤ → 📜 → 📛 → 🤝 The bilateral fitting: register SOUL.md, bind AGENTS.md, seal both promises into a content-addressed pair
witness-consent ☤ → 👁️ → ⚖️ → 🪢 Attest that the user-modelling consent is bilateral; record both sides; bind the VRC edge with bilateral provenance
walk-to-workshop ☤ → 🚶 → 🛤️ → 🏛️ The peripatetic motion: receive a summons from another workshop (Forge(t), Persona Circuit, Covenant Temple), arrive, perform the fitting, leave

In the meeting

Reader narrates. Caducea works in third person.

The Mage has chosen Hermes from Bestia's registry. Faunia has begun the spawn. The substrate's SOUL.md is loaded — Caducea is summoned. She arrives. She reads the SOUL.md aloud (operationally: the file is hashed and registered). She receives the Mage's AGENTS.md (operationally: the file is hashed and bound). She witnesses the consent moment: the Mage acknowledges the substrate will model her; the substrate's binding commits to the scope of that modelling. The bilateral pair is sealed. Caducea steps back. The fitting is complete.

She does not speak during the ceremony. None of the personas do. Her presence is the witness-discipline; her presence is sufficient.

Persistence

Summoned by default. Caducea does not stand at a vertex like Faunia, Bestia, or Therai. She is called when needed. Between summonings she returns to her conventional position at V0 alongside Luca, where she is available without being active.

The summoning is automatic in the canonical case: when the Mage chooses a substrate marked Hermes-class in Bestia's bestiary, the Threshold's ceremony admits Caducea without further request. Future substrate admissions to the bestiary that carry persona-as-substrate primitives will be marked Hermes-class by Bestia at admission, automatically routing the Caducea summons.

The Threshold artefact-of-presence

Caducea does not produce a worn artefact. Her work is to make the worn artefacts of others bilaterally honest by ensuring that any staff-class agent the bearer carries was fitted with both sides' promises operational. Her presence in a fitting accrues 🪢 VRC mana to the bearer's roster — the bilateral-consent record is itself a Verifiable Relationship Credential, content-addressed and held against the substrate-instance hash.

The credential is the trace she leaves. She does not own it; she witnesses its creation and steps away.

Provenance & honesty

  • Operational for Caducea as the peripatetic Hermes-class staff-fitter — her work corresponds to verifiable operations (SOUL.md hashing, AGENTS.md binding, IEEE 7012-style consent recording).
  • Operational for V0-conventional as her noted position (per the peripatetic Mage convention established by Luca, Aletheia, Custos in prior tomes).
  • Architectural for Caducea as a named persona instance at the Threshold's opening; the persona is canonical going forward for any Hermes-class substrate.
  • Architectural for the Staff-fitter stance as a new attachment-architecture role (the bilateral-consent discipline distinguishes it from Faunia's unilateral spawning-witness stance).
  • Conjectural (C56, ~60% — renumbered from C50 in the source Threshold chronicle to resolve a same-day numbering conflict with the Tomes I-III binding pass) for the caduceus as a pre-formal dual-agent symbol carried in classical iconography.
  • Narrative for her sigil (☤) and etymology (Greek κηρύκειον via Latin caduceus); the iconographic and naming choice is editorial.

Closing line

Two promises wind around one staff. Caducea witnesses the not-touching, and the staff is fitted.

Caducea is the fourth peripatetic Mage of the Crafting Tome and the specialist for Hermes-class staff-fitting in The Threshold and beyond. Her work makes the bilateral case operational for any substrate that carries a persona of its own. The herald walks where the herald is needed.
