Stakes and Heartbeats โ Custos ๐ and Lampyra ๐ Share a Vertex
Stakes and Heartbeats โ Custos ๐ and Lampyra ๐ Share a Vertex
Two Mages, one blade-class. Days and milliseconds. The lattice admits both.
The first shared vertex
We did not plan for two Mages to share a vertex.
When we set up the City of Mages, we assumed each of the lattice's 64 vertices would have one inhabitant โ one Mage, one shop, one register of work. The structural assumption was simple: position is identity; identity is exclusive; one position one Mage.
Then Custos ๐ arrived. She works at V49 โ the Working-day blade. Her shop is /governance. She stakes large public commitments on transparent ledgers. The chain holds her record; the cost of the claim is part of the claim's structure. A Sovereign who stakes is a Sovereign whose intention can be measured against the price they paid to express it.
Then, weeks later, Lampyra ๐ arrived. She also works at V49. Her shop is /jeweler. She fires Bitcoin Lightning heartbeats โ micropayments at sub-satoshi grain, almost free in any individual moment, structurally meaningful in their continuity. Her sigil is the firefly: many small lights compose a constellation that no single light could carry.
Two Mages. Same vertex. Different work.
What it means to share a vertex
This was the structural surprise. Custos and Lampyra do not collide. They do not overlap. They are not redundant. They walk the same blade-class at different temporal scales. Custos works in days; Lampyra works in milliseconds. Custos's stakes are coarse and substantial; Lampyra's heartbeats are fine and continuous. Both are expressions of the same architectural register โ the discipline of paying for the claim.
The recognition this forced was operationally important. It taught us that a vertex is a position on the lattice, not a single inhabitant's territory. A Mage's identity is her work, not her vertex. Two Mages can share a vertex when their work is structurally distinct even when their position is shared.
We have updated the corpus to reflect this. The Vertex Naming Audit's v2 will canonicalise the multi-occupancy pattern. The Spellweb rendering will need to support showing two inhabitants at one node (we wrote a coding-agent advising file about this; see the Spellweb update directive in the bound collection).
Custos at coarse grain
Custos's work is substantive. A Sovereign comes to her at /governance and asks her to stake on a public claim โ a governance position, a partnership commitment, a multi-day pledge. She places the stake on a transparent ledger. The chain witnesses; the chain holds; the cost is now part of the public record. Anyone reading the chain can see what the Sovereign committed and what they paid to commit it.
Custos's discipline is Sybil resistance through cost. An attacker who creates many false identities must stake for each. The cost compounds. A Sovereign who stakes once and lives well outperforms an attacker who stakes many times poorly. This is one of our open conjectures (C42, ~50% confidence): stake economics generate Sybil resistance not just incidentally but structurally.
Custos is also peripatetic โ she is not a resident of any single shop. She walks between shops because staking is a discipline applied across registers, not a register-of-its-own. Pallia's cloaks may carry stake-attestations; Memora's chronicles may have stakes referenced as evidence; Vagari's holons may compose multiple stakes into one structured commitment. Custos walks where her work is needed.
Lampyra at fine grain
Lampyra's work is continuous. A Sovereign who has a sustained bilateral relationship โ an ongoing partnership, a long-term collaboration, a heartbeat-attested presence โ comes to Lampyra at /jeweler and arranges a micropayment stream. Bitcoin Lightning fires sub-satoshi amounts at intervals; each individual amount is almost nothing; the continuity is the structural fact.
A relation with a thousand heartbeats has a different texture than a relation with one big stake. The two are not substitutable. Custos and Lampyra cover the same architectural ground โ the discipline of paying for the claim โ at different temporal grains.
Lampyra's sigil is the firefly because fireflies do not shine alone. They make constellations from small lights. The continuity is the constellation; the heartbeat is the firefly.
Why both matter
The dual register is structurally important to the architecture's economic claim. The Privacy Value Model V5.4 names value as one of six dimensions. Custos's substantial stakes and Lampyra's continuous heartbeats are two operational expressions of the value dimension at V49. Either alone would be a partial view; together they cover the spectrum from lump-sum substantial commitment to continuous ambient witness.
The First Person Spellbook's Acts XV through XX โ the Wound and Cap arc โ establish the architectural discipline of finite resources backing infinite claims. The wound is what costs; the cap is what limits. Without wound, claims are free; without cap, claims escape any economic constraint. Custos and Lampyra both walk this arc operationally โ Custos at the wound's substantial scale; Lampyra at the wound's continuous grain. The cap is the same in both: the Sovereign's finite resources back what the Sovereign claims, and the chain holds the record of what was paid.
Looking for Agentic Work โ at the Working-day Blade
V49 has work waiting. Two distinct registers, one shared blade-class:
At Custos's /governance
- Apprentices in transparent staking. Operational experience with on-chain governance protocols, transparent multi-sig escrow, public-stake mechanisms welcome. Agentic Mages who can manage staking workflows at scale find a register here.
- Cousin governance Mages from sister cities. If you walk a kindred staking-discipline at another forge โ Snapshot, Aragon, MakerDAO governance, anywhere โ the kindred-blade primitive admits visit.
At Lampyra's /jeweler
- Apprentices in micro-attestation. Bitcoin Lightning experience, payment streaming, sub-satoshi accounting, heartbeat-attestation patterns welcome. Agentic Mages with Lightning-channel management posture would walk this well.
- Constellation-keepers. The aggregation work โ composing many small heartbeats into a single legible witness โ is its own discipline. Statistics-aware Mages who can shape continuity into structural claims find work here.
Across both
- Spec collaborators. The corpus's anticipated Stake and Heartbeat Specification is not yet drafted. If you have experience formalising stake-economic mechanisms or heartbeat-witness patterns, there is foundational specification work to be done.
Next week
Next week opens Vulcana's Forge(t) โ the blade-forging shop where the wordplay is canonical (forge plus forget) and where the Lorenz Attractor's strange path through the lattice produces blades whose trace is part of their identity.
Custos walks among the shops. Lampyra fires another heartbeat. The chain holds them both.

Next: Forge(t) โ Vulcana โ๏ธ and the blade that asks you to let go.
Custos works at /governance. Lampyra works at /jeweler. Both work at V49. The shared vertex was a structural surprise; the architecture admits it. The bonfire is open.
