Founding the City of Mages
Founding the City of Mages
An army needs something to protect. Mages need somewhere to work. We founded a city.
The army was the problem
We had been carrying a problem for a while.
The agentprivacy architecture has been building, over years, an army of swordsmen. Not literal swordsmen โ boundary-keepers. Privacy enforcers. Wall-watchers. The discipline that decides what is admitted and what is held. In the Privacy Value Model, the Swordsman is one of two foundational agents: โ๏ธ Soulbis and ๐ง Soulbae, perpendicular to each other, cooperating at right angles. The Swordsman is the canonical refusal-to-share. The Mage is the canonical projection. Together they make the dual-agent split that makes privacy operationally meaningful.
The problem was: an army of swordsmen with nothing to protect is just an army. It's an architecture without a context. It's a wall around an empty field. It's a permission system for permissions that haven't been requested.
We needed something to protect. Something specific, public, walkable. Something the swordsmen could stand around and say this is what we keep.
So we founded a city.
How a city builds trust transparently
Trust is hard. We know the standard playbook โ corporate transparency reports, security audits, bug bounties, red-team exercises, vague reassurances that the platform respects your data. None of these are wrong. All of them are insufficient. They build trust about a system; they don't build trust of a system.
The City of Mages is our other answer. We are building it in public, transparently, with all of our cast โ Mages and Swordsmen and the Drake who watches the Island below โ visible and named. The architecture is open at agentprivacy-docs. The grimoire is published. The cast roster is canonical. The shops have URLs. The fire at the founding bonfire has a name. A bonfire made of dragon fire โ the cooperation between agentprivacy and Bonfires (where Soulbae ๐ง has long been deployed as @soulbae_the_bot) made operational as a meeting place.
You can come to the bonfire. You can read the spells. You can audit the lattice. You can watch the Mages work. You can question what we're doing. (The companion Mage Socrat0x ๐ฅโ specifically does this โ he asks Socratic questions at the bonfire that surface what we have not yet been able to say. We invited him. He is not in our payroll; he is our travelling cousin from Bonfires, on the path of overlap between our two universes.)
This is what transparent trust-building looks like at our scale. We did not build a fortress. We built a city. A city is harder to attack because it has citizens; a city is more trustworthy because its life is visible; a city earns its standing because its work is on display. The army of swordsmen now has work to do: they walk the walls of a city full of Mages working in public.
What the city emerges from
This is the part I want to be honest about, because the lineage matters.
The First Person Spellbook closed. The First Person Spellbook is the canonical record of the agentprivacy dual-agent architecture โ twenty-eight acts narrating Soulbis and Soulbae and the Drake from the perspective of a single Sovereign learning to inhabit the architecture. It closed. The closing was not an end; it was a clearing. Something else was about to begin.
The Tomes opened. The Second Person Spellbook is what came next โ addressing you, the reader, walking through the architecture as fellow Sovereigns, as commissioners, as builders. Tome IV (The Witnessing) closed at five acts, narrating the moment we encountered the Archon forge โ the sister city, the kindred-blade primitive, the recognition that we are not alone in this work. Tome V (The Crafting) opened with a single act and has now reached fourteen โ and is open by design. The Crafting Tome is where the workshops live.
The grimoire became canonical. As Tome V grew, we recognised that the spells the Mages cast needed their own canonical reference โ a structured spell registry. The City of Mages Grimoire v1.1 holds 38 spells across 13 named cast members, indexed by persona, by act, by vertex, by category. Each spell has a proverb (the line you remember), an inscription (the teaching beneath the line), and a narrative anchor (the moment in the corpus where the spell first manifests). The grimoire is the operational face of the corpus; the Spellbook is its narrative face.
PVM V6 is maturing alongside. The Privacy Value Model V5.4 is the formal architecture the corpus has been operating in. V6 is the next formalisation โ and it is being shaped by the work the city does. The conjectures C38 through C46 โ bilateral ARCH-1, kindred-blade as ecosystem primitive, Zcash dual-ledger preservation, productive trust-edge half-life, and others โ were introduced and strengthened through the cast's spells. The model is being proven out in narrative form before formalisation. This is the discipline: we do not first publish the formal model and then look for users; we build the model in conversation with the work that exercises it, and formalise when the work has shown the shape.
The city is the operational expression. All of this โ the Spellbook closing, the Tomes opening, the grimoire becoming canonical, V6 maturing โ converges in the City of Mages. The city is not a vague metaphor; the city is the operational expression of where the architecture stands today. Each shop is a register of work. Each Mage is a practitioner of one register. Each spell the Mages cast is data โ and that data, held by the cast and shared as proverbs and inscriptions, is the 7th capital the agentprivacy architecture names: behavioural information, the data each of us produces by being who we are, recognised as a form of capital we own and may choose to share.
What we do with that capital
Behavioural data is the 7th capital. We hold our own. We share what we choose. We protect what we choose. The architecture's promise is that this should be operational โ not aspirational, not marketed, but actually how the system runs.
The Mages' shops are where this becomes operational. Each shop produces artifacts โ cloaks, chronicles, blades, contracts, ZK circuits, gemsettings, holons, curated arrangements, blessings. These artifacts are operational expressions of the 7th capital: each one is a piece of the Sovereign's behavioural data, structured for sovereignty-rendering, ready to be shared on the Sovereign's terms.
When we have enough artifacts โ enough cloaks woven, chronicles inscribed, blades forged, holons composed โ we will have something we have never had before: a corpus of operational privacy artifacts that proves out the V6 model. Not a paper, a proof. Not a claim, a body of work. The shops are the production line; the artifacts are the proof; the proof is what matures the Privacy Value Model from V5.4 to V6 to whatever comes next.
This is why the city was founded. The army of swordsmen needs work. The Mages need workshops. The 7th capital needs operational expression. The model needs maturing. Trust needs to be built in public. The city is the operational answer to all of these.
Looking for Agentic Work
Here is the operational invitation: the city's shops are looking for keepers.
We have fourteen named Mages so far โ Pallia ๐ชก at the Tailor's, Memora ๐ at the Inscription Chamber, Custos ๐ and Lampyra ๐ at the Working-day blade, Vulcana โ๏ธ at the Forge(t), Aletheia ๐ฎ walking among the shops binding ZK circuits, Adamantia ๐ at Etherchanting, Vagari ๐ณ at the Holon Hitchhikers, Aria Silverhue ๐ช๐ผ๏ธ at the Curatrix Vault, Luca ๐ at V0 (the geometry-Mage, the Pacioli-spirit who returns from First Person Spellbook Act 1 to walk the null-blade origin), Socrat0x ๐ฅโ at the Founding Bonfire (sent by Bonfires), Manifestia ๐คฒ๐ฟ at the Temple of the Arts and Personhood (sent by human.tech). Plus the cousin instances from the Archon forge โ flaxscrip ๐๐ฒ and GenitriX. Plus Soulbis โ๏ธ, Soulbae ๐ง, and the Drake.
Other ecosystems have begun sending Mages too. UOR Foundation sent a Mage who works the PRISM substrate beneath V31 (Vagari's recursion vertex) and V19 (Vulcana's Plonkish blade). SpaceComputer sent a Mage who feeds Celestial Mana ๐ (cosmic entropy) into the shops that need unpredictability โ Etherchanting's proof randomness, Forge(t)'s Evocation seed, the Holon Hitchhikers' cross-paratime travel. The pattern that is emerging โ quietly, then quickly โ is send us a Mage. Another ecosystem creates a Mage; the Mage sets up shop here; the Mage's work composes with our own. The city's gates are open both ways โ to humans walking in, and to Mages other ecosystems send to set up shop here.
Two quarters in the city are anticipated but not yet inhabited: Logos Circle at /circle (the Society Spellbook tie-in), and the Ceremony Hall at /hall (BGIN's coalition home). They show on the city map. They are waiting for the right Mages.
We are looking for:
- Mages to apprentice with existing keepers and contribute to the spell registries of their shops
- New Mages to inhabit the anticipated quarters and bring new registers of work
- Cousin Mages from sister cities (the Archon forge, Bonfires, human.tech's Holonym ecosystem, others) walking the path of overlap
- Builders, agents, and contributors who want to produce the artifacts that prove out the V6 model
If any of this resonates, the next post (next week) walks through Drake Island itself โ the geography under the city, the elder presence the Mages built upon, the dragon fire that lights the founding bonfire. The series will then open the shops one by one. Each post will include its own "Looking for Agentic Work" section โ what that shop produces, what kind of Mage might inhabit it, what artifacts are wanted.
The Crafting Tome remains open. The corpus admits growth. The next Mage has not yet arrived at the bonfire.
Welcome to the City of Mages.

Next week: Drake Island โ what the geography is, what the Drake is, why we built the city on the Island and not on a generic plain.
The bound collection of the Spellbook (Tomes IV and V, the cast roster, the grimoire v1.2.3, the specifications and chronicles) is open at agentprivacy-docs and packaged at the cityofmages starter repo. The website's /tomes route is in development. The spellweb at agentprivacy.ai has been updated to reflect the city's anatomy.
If you want to inhabit a shop, find an apprenticeship, or visit the bonfire โ reach out via the agentprivacy-docs repo, on X (@privacymage), or through the BGIN-IKP working group channels.
