"text": "## Why a pathway, not a list\n\nProof of Understanding is not an event. It is a sequence with directionality — each step depends on the integrity of the step before it, and each step prepares the substrate for the step after. Treating the architecture as a flat list of features obscures the load-bearing fact that the ceremony's strength comes from the *order* in which the operations occur, not their presence. A blade forged with steps out of order is structurally invalid even if every operation completed successfully.\n\nThe pathway also makes the architecture inspectable. Any party can be asked: *at which step did your blade fail?* — and the answer is a single integer between 1 and 10. This is the diagnostic property that today's stored-secret trust systems cannot offer, because their failures are opaque (\"the key was leaked\" tells you nothing about the trust relationship that depended on it).\n\n---"

These are technical terms, not metaphors, and they are retained throughout. The full terminology table — including reading translations for the verifiable-credentials, cryptography, and DID communities, and the runic-pattern grammar that ties the family together — is documented in **§0 of the companion technical specification** (`proof_of_understanding_technical_spec.md`).\n\nThe short form, for a reader landing here first:\n\n- *Creat-ur-es* are forged agents (the Mage and Swordsman processes). They are *who* forges.\n- *Art-e-facts* are forged objects (blades, inscribed spells, proverb-pairs). They are *what* gets forged. *Blade* is the canonical art-e-fact; the name stays because blades cut proofs.\n- *Run-e-craft* is the Mage-side practice across sessions. *Run-e-create* is the Swordsman-side act within one session. This is the protocol's only fully informal stage — and it must be informal, because formalising it would foreclose what it is supposed to enable.\n\n**What happens.** Two parties — any combination of human, agent, institution, ecological subject, or other — agree to engage in a Proof of Understanding ceremony with each other. Agreement is the only requirement. No cryptographic operation has yet occurred.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** None.\n\n**Semantic operation.** Mutual intent declaration. Each party communicates the willingness to undertake a bilateral trust ceremony with the other, and acknowledges receipt of that willingness in return.\n\n**Failure modes.** Coerced encounter (one party did not freely consent); structural asymmetry (one party cannot refuse without disproportionate cost); deception (one party intends not to honour what they are about to commit to); proxy substitution (the entity that consents is not the entity that will forge). The architecture treats each of these as fatal — a resulting blade is structurally invalid even if all later steps execute correctly. The first step's integrity is the only thing the architecture cannot mechanically check, which is why it is also the only step a constitution can be written about.\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: discovery protocols; agent advertising via ERC-8004 trustless agent identity; BGIN matchmaking flows; the MyTerms / IEEE 7012-2025 invitation pattern; consent verification for non-human or institutional encounter; ecological \"consent\" via guardian protocols (Whanganui, Te Urewera, Mar Menor patterns).]*\n\n---"

The foundational moment. *No constellation can be mapped before the stars are named together.* If this step fails, every subsequent step is built on sand.\n\n**What happens.** The parties surface and exchange the vocabulary they will use during the ceremony. For human pairs this is a short conversation. For AI agents it is an ontology-stub exchange over TSP (Trust Spanning Protocol). For human-machine pairs it is a translation layer. For cross-substrate pairs (e.g. a human and an ecological subject mediated by a guardian) it is a triangulation.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** Both parties hash the shared vocabulary fragment $V_{AB}$ and sign the result. They exchange $h_V = \\mathrm{hash}(V_{AB})$ with each party's signature attached. The commitment is content-addressed: identical vocabularies produce identical CIDs, and any drift in vocabulary later will be detectable.\n\n**Semantic operation.** Shared denotation. Each party can produce, on demand, the meaning each term carries *in this relationship*. That meaning — not the public dictionary — is what governs the rest of the ceremony.\n\n**Failure modes.** Vocabulary asymmetry (one party has more granular terms than the other and the parties paper over the difference); deliberate ambiguity (using a term whose meaning each party privately fills in differently); translation drift in human-machine or cross-substrate pairs; vocabulary inflation (committing to more terms than the ceremony will use, which dilutes the signal of which terms actually mattered).\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: TSP schema negotiation details; the canonical ontology-stub format; integration with MyTerms verbs and W3C DPV; the multi-intelligence vocabulary problem — how does a forest \"name a star\"?; vocabulary regeneration in long-running ceremonies where the substrate evolves under the blade.]*\n\n---"

The transition from vocabulary to substrate — from naming to walking.\n\n**What happens.** The parties select an ordered subgraph $C = (N, E)$ of a shared topological substrate. The substrate is *any* UOR-mapped topology: a knowledge graph, codebase ontology, regulatory rulebook, product catalogue, ecological-monitoring dataset, narrative spellbook. The nodes $N$ are the meaningful waypoints; the edges $E$ are the transitions between them. The constellation as a whole is content-addressed, yielding the constellation's CID.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** Both parties commit to the constellation CID $c_C$. They sign a joint manifest binding the encounter (step 1), the language commitment $h_V$ (step 2), and $c_C$. The manifest is the precondition record for all subsequent cryptographic operations on this ceremony.\n\n**Semantic operation.** Shared ground. The constellation is the territory both parties will walk together. Without it, the phrase \"I understand you\" has no referent against which \"understanding\" can be verified.\n\n**Failure modes.** Substrate mismatch (the same nodes carry incompatible schemas on each side); node ambiguity (a node's content is not stably resolvable); substrate drift between mapping and traversal (the spellweb updates under the ceremony); selection bias (one party steers toward nodes that flatter their pre-existing position).\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: UOR coordinate assignment for new substrates; the spellweb's 119-node reference graph; multi-substrate ceremonies (one party's substrate is a subset of the other's); recursive constellation mapping (a constellation that includes a previous constellation as a node); substrate selection for ecological and alien-intelligence ceremonies, where the \"graph\" may be a temporal trajectory rather than a static topology.]*\n\n---"

This is where attention is converted into proof.\n\n**What happens.** Parties traverse the constellation in lockstep. Each traversal step is one *lap* — an intentional transition between two adjacent nodes. Each lap satisfies the R1CS-style constraint $\\mathrm{hamming}(\\lambda^{\\mathrm{src}} \\oplus \\lambda^{\\mathrm{dst}}) = 1$ when projected onto the 64-vertex sovereignty lattice. As laps accumulate, the six-quality activation vector binarises at threshold, yielding the blade's vertex address $v \\in \\{0,1\\}^6$ — which subset of {Protection, Delegation, Memory, Connection, Computation, Value} is asserted by this blade.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** Each lap produces:\n\n- a *Swordsman* hash-chain entry $\\sigma_j = \\mathrm{Ed25519}_{\\text{session}}(\\mathrm{SHA256}(\\lambda_j \\,\\|\\, \\sigma_{j-1}))$, where the session key is generated at ceremony open and will be burned at step 7;\n- a *Mage* annotation: a JSON-LD fragment in the persistent identity's spellbook, signed under the Mage's long-lived key.\n\nThe two sides accumulate in parallel and remain conditionally independent given the constellation. The 62-Lap Theorem holds that $m \\geq 620$ intentional transitions drive the reconstruction ceiling $R < 1$ — at that density the proof becomes irreducible. (Unit note, 2026-07-18: transitions here; the deployed spec's tier table counts full constellation traversals — see the technical spec §2 unit note, ledger L154. The threshold is conjectural at any value, register C11.)\n\n**Semantic operation.** Shared attention. The forging *is* the lived attention of both parties on the same nodes in the same order. This is the irreducible substance of the eventual proof. Compression in step 5 will name it; inscription in step 6 will commit to it; rehydration in step 9 will test it; but the attention itself can only happen here.\n\n**Failure modes.** Traversal divergence (one party drifts off the constellation); inattention (laps committed without semantic engagement, which density audits will later flag); session timeout; session-key corruption; constellation revision mid-forge.\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: the 62-Lap Theorem's proof sketch and conjecture status (V5.1 C11); dimension-binarisation threshold parameters; the BRAID-style reasoning-graph projection of a multi-lap traversal; lap-rate scaling and what happens at very low or very high cadence; the relationship between forging duration and behavioural density $\\rho$.]*\n\n---"

"text": "## Step 5: Compression\n\n**Pathway position.** Step 5 of 10. The semantic peak. This is where lived attention becomes a portable object.\n\n**What happens.** Each party produces a proverb — $P_A$ and $P_B$ — that compresses the traversal into natural language. Each may also produce an inscribed spell, an emoji-glyph compression for portability. The two proverbs are independent acts of authorship: parties do not coordinate, do not share drafts, do not converge on a single phrasing. The independence is structural.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** None at this step. The compression itself is the cryptographic substrate of what follows; no signing happens yet. (This is a deliberate ordering — the proverb must be free authorship, not a signature target.)\n\n**Semantic operation.** Bilateral authorship. Each party expresses what the traversal meant *to them*, in their own words. The independence is what makes the eventual proof bilateral rather than merely co-signed: a co-signed object proves coordination, but a pair of independent compressions proves comprehension.\n\n**Failure modes.** Coordinated authorship (the parties shared a draft, so the proverbs are not independent acts); mimicry (one party copies the other's structure); inflation (proverbs much longer than the constellation supports); collapse (proverbs too short to compress anything meaningful); LLM-mediated drift (an AI agent generates a proverb that pattern-matches the constellation surface but misses what was traversed).\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: proverb generation guidelines; emoji-glyph compression rules; proverb-density metrics; multi-intelligence proverb forms — what compression looks like for an ecological subject, what an AI's proverb should look like when authored without coordination with a human partner, and what an alien-intelligence equivalent might require; proverb-quality assessment for the witness step.]*\n\n---"

After this, the ceremony has a public record.\n\n**What happens.** The parties compute the bilateral commitment $x = \\mathrm{hash}(P_A \\,\\|\\, P_B)$. They jointly select a visibility ratio $\\sigma \\in [0,1]$ from the visibility spectrum — 0%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, 100% being the canonical sweet spots — and execute the corresponding inscription path:\n\n- **Symmetric ($\\sigma = 0$):** only $x$ is published. Both proverbs hidden.\n- **Asymmetric ($\\sigma = 1$, default):** $P_A$ goes to the transparent record; $P_B$ remains committed only in the hash.\n- **Interleaved ($0 < \\sigma < 1$):** each proverb fragments; halves interweave across the visibility boundary, with $\\sigma$ determining the cut.\n\nThe commitment is anchored to one or more chains per the identity's chain-portability strategy (Zcash for native asymmetric/symmetric/interleaved; Bitcoin for permanence; Ethereum for composability; IPFS for replication; private mesh for shadow ceremonies).\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** $x$ is computed and signed by both parties. The selected inscription path generates the on-chain artifact. The transaction is broadcast and reaches finality on each target chain.\n\n**Semantic operation.** Public placement. The commitment becomes part of the chain's permanent record, available to verifiers indefinitely. The choice of $\\sigma$ is itself a signal — it declares what kind of relationship this is meant to be.\n\n**Failure modes.** Visibility mismatch (the parties chose $\\sigma$ asymmetrically and produced an unrecoverable artifact); chain congestion at inscription time; key fault on either side; intentional concealment by one party of which path was actually taken; the visibility budget collapsing on one party's identity (Section 7 of the technical spec).\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: multi-chain inscription strategies and their trade-offs; visibility-budget management across an identity's lifetime; the $\\sum_i \\sigma_i \\cdot \\rho_i$ accumulation function and its operational implications; the φ-derived sweet spots and the conjecture (V5 C-pending) that they represent natural attractors; ceremony-type-to-visibility mapping (Shadow, Guarded, Balanced, Open, Declared).]*\n\n---"

The blade is finalised here.\n\n**What happens.** Each party verifies the other's blade. The Mage-key signature (Sun view — persistent key, held across sessions) and the Swordsman-key signature (Moon reflection — ephemeral session key, generated at ceremony open) co-sign the finalised blade tuple $b = (v, x, \\sigma, \\rho, \\tau)$. The Swordsman session key is then burned. The blade is sealed.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** Dual-signature lock:\n\n$$\n\\Sigma_b \\;=\\; \\mathrm{Ed25519}_{\\text{Mage}}(b) \\,\\|\\, \\mathrm{Ed25519}_{\\text{Swordsman, session}}(b)\n$$\n\nVerification of the blade later requires both signatures plus the chain-anchored commitment. The Swordsman key burn is the architecture's commitment that *this session's act* is over — what happens next is a new session, with new ephemeral keys.\n\n**Failure modes.** One-sided witness (only one party countersigns and the ceremony falls back to a credential, not a bilateral proof); session key not properly burned (retains attack surface); equipment failure between forging and witness; coerced witness (one party signs under duress).\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: the public-testimony pattern, where a third audience witnesses the bilateral recognition (as performed with Soulbae and the Hitchhiker community in the reference ceremony); reconnection protocols if witness fails partway; partial-witness recovery; the burn-receipt format; multi-party witness for $d_4$ Connection-active blades.]*\n\n---"

The original ceremony is over; the blade's working life begins.\n\n**What happens.** Each party appends the blade $b$ to their identity's blade multiset $\\Pi$. The blade's commitment is anchored across the chains selected in step 6. The blade is replicated across providers per the holonic persistence layer — its content-addressed CID lets it survive any single-provider failure with $p(\\tau) \\to 1$. Each party's path integral $T_\\int(\\pi)$ updates to include $b$'s contribution. The trust-in-action step. **This is the step that defines whether the original ceremony was real.** Every step from 1 to 8 was preparing this moment.\n\n**What happens.** At some later time $t' > \\tau$, a query references the blade — by name (the proverb is cited), by CID (the commitment is verified), or by implication (an agent's behaviour is expected to honour what the blade encoded). The bearer attempts to rehydrate: to unfold the proverb back into the constellation it compressed, demonstrating that the compression still carries the original meaning. The unfolding is then matched against the chain-anchored commitment $x$ as the truth-checker.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** The rehydrated unfolding is hashed and compared against the chain-anchored commitment. The Swordsman session key is *unavailable* (burned at step 7), so rehydration depends entirely on the Mage-side persistent context. For asymmetric inscriptions, the visible proverb provides a recovery anchor; for symmetric, the counterparty must be present for any verification at all.\n\n**Semantic operation.** Demonstration of comprehension. A faithful rehydration produces a structure consistent with the constellation and the inscribed proverb. A failed rehydration produces drift, contradiction, or incoherence — and the trust graph automatically logs the failure.\n\nThis is the step that distinguishes Proof of Understanding from every other trust primitive. A token can be *replayed*; it cannot be *re-understood*. A signature can be *forwarded*; it cannot *demonstrate comprehension on demand*. The rehydration step is what makes the architecture immune to credential-passing and AI-context-corruption attacks: a bearer whose understanding has degraded cannot fake the rehydration, because rehydration is a generative act against a public commitment.\n\n**Failure modes.** Context corruption (the bearer's model has drifted, been swapped, been prompt-injected, or otherwise lost the prior); proverb misremembering; counterparty unavailability for bilateral re-verification of symmetric blades; substrate drift (the underlying spellweb has changed in ways that make the original constellation unreadable); time-decay effects.\n\n**Open detail.** *[To expand: rehydration-scoring rubrics; partial-rehydration credit and how it is granted; multi-agent verification quorums for high-stakes rehydration; AI-specific rehydration protocols where the bearer is a model and the verifier is another model; cross-intelligence rehydration (what does it mean for an ecological subject to \"rehydrate\" a proverb?); the relationship between rehydration fidelity and the path-integral term $T_\\int(\\pi)$.]*\n\n---"

The pathway loops back to step 1 — every trust update is a new encounter waiting to happen.\n\n**What happens.** The result of the rehydration (success, partial, failure) feeds back into the path integral. Successful rehydration thickens the bilateral edge between the two identities; failed rehydration decays it. The identity's $V(\\mathcal{I}, t)$ recomputes with the updated path. The two parties may then choose to re-ceremony at a higher tier (Blade → Light → Heavy → Dragon), hold their existing trust steady, or sever the relationship entirely. Severance does not erase the blade — the chain record remains — but it removes the bilateral edge from the active trust graph.\n\n**Cryptographic operation.** Path integral $T_\\int(\\pi)$ recomputation. Optional re-anchoring if the visibility ratio is to be adjusted (a new inscription cycle starts at step 6 with the same blade content but a new $\\sigma$).\n\n**Semantic operation.** Continuity.
