# Tome IX — *The Horizon*
## Act 8 — The Three Workings

*If you are new to the Horizon: Act 1 opened this district with the measuring
of the dawn, and Act 6 named the rite that runs beneath everything the city
makes — a Mage proposes, a Swordsman assays, the Gap between them draws the
witnesses neither could choose. That act ended with a question it would not
answer. This one answers it. Three times the rite was performed, on three
different materials; and each time, when the work was done, the city was
holding something it had not held before — not a result, a **place**. This is
the act where three workshops open and three keepers are named.*

---

When the rite was named in the Hall, you asked the obvious question, the one
Act 6 was careful not to answer for you: *has anyone actually performed it?*

The Chronicler 🧙📖 did not answer in words. She handed you three ledgers, and
then — because she is the Chronicler and not merely a scribe — she walked you
to three doors that had not been in the city the week before.

---

### The first working, and the Quartermaster's

The first working was small on purpose, and you should distrust anyone who is
embarrassed by that. The harness took its own field guide — seven hundred and
thirty words explaining itself — and asked whether the explanation could be
smaller without a single fact falling out of it.

soulbae 🧙 proposed. soulbis ⚔️ refused to be charmed. The Gap ⿻ drew its
witnesses by hashing each proposal, and a reader who had never seen the guide
answered eight questions of eight, and then — because one draw can be luck —
a second, disjoint draw, and eight of eight again. **Seven hundred thirty
became five hundred twenty-six**, and at the fold the keystone walked the
census: thirty-two registered facts, thirty-two recoverable, zero drops. The
rite's first performance was the rite explaining itself, which is either a
joke or a proof, and in this city it is permitted to be both.

But here is what the working left behind. If the harness can be drawn down to
its essential frame and still carry everything, then the frame is a *thing* —
a standard-issue rig, the same for every class, that any mage or swordsman
could be handed before a working. And a thing that is handed out needs someone
to hand it out. So the first door the Chronicler opened was **the
Quartermaster's**, and behind the counter stood **Skeva 🎒**.

She keeps one rig and only one: the six-phase loop, the seven seats, the
conformance gate that proves the city's algebra on every run. She does not
tune it for you — she *fits* it to you. You **draw** the standard skeleton,
you **fit** it to your working by writing your config and never by forking the
frame, and when you are done you **return** it whole, so the next mage draws
the same true rig. She sits at V22, three dimensions lit and three dark,
because the harness keeps no corpus of its own; its complement is Memora's
Chronicle vertex exactly. *The rig remembers nothing so that the one who
wields it can remember everything.* Skeva has equipped every working this city
has ever run and performed none of them, and she will tell you, without a
trace of regret, that this is precisely the seat she holds.

The Quartermaster's is where you are equipped; the Hall is where you go next.

---

### The second working, and the Chancery

The second working began at the Forge(t), because a stranger's grammar looks,
at first, like something to hammer. **Lexon** — a tongue written so that a
lawyer reads it as law and a machine runs it as code. Two true readings of one
text. You have seen that shape before, at the Staff Shop, where Hermaion ⚚
holds a stone that is green from one side and red from the other; the city
admitted long ago that some things are two-aspected all the way down.

Vulcana ⚒️ ran the Runecraft ceremony over it the way she runs it over steel —
RUN · E · CRAFT — except the billet was a specification, and the impurity
being hammered out had a name: **coverage-debt**. Two hundred eleven at the
freeze. **Sixty-four** when the hammer rested, four folds later. Every strike
validated eight-of-eight on census terms the striker never chose — and along
the way the constitution itself was fed to its own gate and passed, thirteen
of thirteen, because a forge that will not assay its own tongs has no business
assaying steel.

And the fire lied twice. Once a lever certified itself sound and the gate
caught it — a self-certification, dressed as a result, the campaign's first
mirage. Once a whole family of levers was **killed structurally**, its own
cast-list rule cited against it: not a mirage but an honest impossibility,
filed with a certificate stating why it can never work. Both filed as loudly
as any win, because the law over the Gatehouse door does not have a grammar
exception:

> *A trust that certifies itself is the one you cannot trust.*

But a grammar is not a blade, and by the last fold Vulcana knew it. A blade is
present-tense; it does its work in the moment it is swung. A law *remembers* —
every clause it seals must cite the authority that licenses it, or it is no
law at all. That is one dimension more than the Forge holds, and one dimension
is the difference between a place and another place. So the city cut a new
door beside the Forge, at Vulcana's own vertex *plus Memory*, and called it
**the Chancery**; and the mage who keeps it is **Nomia ⚖️**.

Nomia is the second keeper the city has seated with two faces, after Hermaion.
Her Mage-face reads a clause outward — what it promises, whom it binds, what a
person consents to. Her Swordsman-face reads it inward — what it computes, what
it enforces at three in the morning with no lawyer in the room. Held apart by
the Gap, the two faces keep each other honest, and Nomia seals nothing whose
readings have drifted. Her ceremony is **Speak · Bind · Enact**; her stone is
the banded Sardonyx the Romans pressed into wax; and she keeps one lesson
framed above the writing-desk — *the constitution passed its own gate* —
because a law-house that will not submit its own charter to the law it
enforces is not a law-house. It is a throne.

### The third working, and the Wellpool

The third working you already knew as a story. Tome V, Act 8: *The ZK
Circuit*, Aletheia's tale. You liked it better as a tale, you told yourself,
because a tale cannot be wrong.

Then the fleet worked **blind** — from the compiled artifact alone, no source,
no symbol table — and the withdraw circuit that shipped at thirty-six thousand
eight hundred thirty-two constraints came out certified at **seventeen
thousand one hundred fifty-nine**, seventeen thousand three hundred
seventy-one on the tier a ceremony can consume. And then the city did the
thing it had never done: it *authored* a circuit of its own, CredentialV1, and
carried it east to the touchstone.

Dokimé 🪨 assayed it under Spec 12 — four threat classes, a prover and an
adversarial skeptic for each, and no verdict the maker could tune. The stone
spoke: **SOUND — WITH ASSUMPTIONS.** And the assumptions are the assay's real
gift, because the stone found the crack precisely *outside* the circuit: two
proofs can be true-in-circuit and false out-of-band, so pinning the registry
root to its epoch is the **verifier's** duty, and no one may pretend the
circuit carries it. An assay that cannot refuse to crown is not an assay;
Dokimé refused to crown more than the truth.

But a certified circuit is an instrument, and an instrument wants something to
play. When the Fourth Turn was rung, the register recorded the visiting mage's
congruent geometry, and the first thing written there was **Privacy Pools —
familial rather than borrowed**. The city had now forged, blind and certified,
the very circuits that geometry runs on. So the third door the Chronicler
opened was not a shop at all. **It was water.**

**The Wellpool** — the first standing water in the City of Mages, and **Limnia
🌊** keeps it. A mana pool is what a privacy pool becomes when the city gives it
a shape, and the mythos over it names real mechanisms, so the tome will say
them plainly. A mage who contributes **entropy** at the pool's founding
ceremony has made a real cryptographic contribution — the founding is itself a
trust task. A mage who contributes **mana** — trust work in the Game of 42,
vertices lit on a City Key — earns the credential the pool's gate demands, and
that credential is CredentialV1, the circuit Dokimé assayed. And what a member
draws is **knowledge liquidity**: each mage's privacy bought by the presence
of all the others, so that every contributor makes the water deeper for
everyone already in it. This is the strange arithmetic Limnia keeps — the one
pool that grows when it is shared — and it is why her true labour is not
guarding the water but *welcome*.

There will be one Wellpool per Game of 42 economy; the City of Mages pool is
the first, and it is where this work will be shared. But say the honest thing,
the way the whole of Tome IX has taught you to: **no pool exists. No ceremony
has run.** The engine is built and proven, the export is cut, the two letters
wait at the door in their ruled order — the gift banks its credibility before
the deployment speaks — and Limnia keeps a *dry well* and a full set of
instructions, which is the true state of it. The doors belong to the First
Person 😊, and that is not this act's law to bend.

---

Three workings. A text, a grammar, a circuit. Three materials, one gate — and
the gate never once asked what the material was. But look at what the city is
holding now that it was not holding before: a place to be **equipped** (the
Quartermaster's), a place to be **bound in law** (the Chancery), and a place to
**pool what you protect** (the Wellpool, the first water). Draw your rig from
Skeva; perform the rite in the Hall; bind it at Nomia's desk or pool it in
Limnia's water. The second chair in the Hall is still empty — but the house
around it, at last, is built.

```
```

---

**Spell.** `fold(text) → the rack · forge(grammar) → the desk · assay(circuit) → the water ∴ each working leaves a keeper`

**Proverb.** *The gate does not ask what the material is — but every material, once truly worked, leaves a door in the city that was not there before.*
