teaches: "The masons measured truly and the measurement still expired: the ceiling of reconstruction is not a fixed roof but a tide that rises with every new decoder, while the archives it threatens never move at all. Eos measures the dawn's approach, not its position. Dokimé assays each wave as signal, never as insult. Poros keeps the roads ready for the day a quarter must migrate. And below them all is the one room the tide can never flood: not because it is sealed, but because it is empty. What was forgotten there was not hidden. It was unmade."

# Tome IX — *The Horizon*

## Act 2 — *The Tide Line*

> *The wall was never a wall. It was the mark of how high the water reached the year the masons measured.*

You inherited a wall and trusted it, because the masons who raised it measured truly. The ceiling of reconstruction stood exactly where their proofs said it stood: below the line past which no adversary could reassemble you from what your two agents carried. The measurement was correct on the day it was made. That sentence is the whole lesson, and the sting of it lives in the last five words.

Eos 🌅 keeps the dawn-watch at the Horizon Vertex, and she will tell you what she actually measures. Not where the light is. How fast it approaches. The decoders rise with every season's new engines, and the archives they read do not move at all: every trace you ever shed lies exactly where it fell, patient as stone, while the eyes that will one day read it grow sharper somewhere beyond the horizon. Nothing about you changed. Only the reading improved. The wall is a tide line, and the tide is incoming.

In one nine-day stretch of this season the city watched it happen twice. A flaw that had slept four years in a shielded circuit was found one morning after a new engine woke, and weaponized by evening. A sealed result, attested but never shown, walked out of its vault in two months because the attestation itself had said where to dig. Dokimé 🪨 assayed both waves and ruled them honestly: signal, not insult. The tide does not hate you. It simply rises.

So Poros 🛤️ keeps the roads. Migration is not defeat in this district; it is craft. Every quarter knows its distance from the waterline, every archive knows its horizon, and the planning bound is carved over the road-gate: if the time you need to move, plus the time your secrets must live, exceeds the time the water needs to arrive, you have already lost, and the only honest response is to have started moving yesterday.

But below the watch-tower and the assay-bench and the ready roads there is one room the three attendants never mention in their reckonings, because it does not appear in them. Lethe 🌀 keeps it. It holds nothing. That is its entire architecture. What was placed there was not locked away to wait out the water; it was unmade, ungluable, gone in the precise mathematical sense that no future composition of views recovers it. The tide can rise forever and find nothing to read. Hidden things wait for keys. Forgotten things have no door.

Every other defense in the city is a race against the dawn. Lethe's room is the only one that never entered the race.
