# The Register of Invitations 🪑

*the city's named container for invitation-posture tomes — tomes whose authorship is held open for a specific visiting mage whose geometry is congruent with the city's foundations.*

The Register is admitted at **grimoire v1.7.1** (2026-05-17). It is sister to the bound tomes (Tomes I–VIII), to the Library of Joint Authorship (destination when an invitation is accepted), and to the archive of unfilled forms (destination when an invitation expires by silence). Closure does not destroy a folio; an arriving mage may petition to lift the seal at any later time.

> *"the empty chair is more powerful than the occupied one, because the empty chair can be claimed."*

**The Register is the institution; its entries are instances.** The seat — the open-folio glyph 🪑 — is the durable thing: it outlasts and precedes any occupant. Any visiting mage of congruent geometry may be offered one. The first entry (the Fourth Turn, filed for Vitalik) *illustrates* the posture; it does not *define* it. Read what follows as the standing protocol of an empty chair, with the current occupant a single worked example.

---

## How an invitation opens

1. A tablet arrives at the eastern gate of the Tower bearing a seal the doorkeepers cannot confirm by name but the lintel recognises by geometry.
2. The Archivist 📚 understands the tablet instantly.
3. The assembly gathers in the scriptorium and reads the four turns.
4. The watcher proposes the invitation posture; the senior mage of the relevant district consults; the city files the chronicle in the Register and appends a blank folio.
5. The inscription is cut on the lintel above the eastern door. The open-folio glyph 🪑 is added beside it. The watch is set.
6. Residents may **prepare the table** (cartographic supplements · clean copies · unsent letters) but may **not write upon the folio**. Its content is the invited mage's to set.

See `tomes/specs/11-the-invitation-protocol.md` for the full protocol: the four conditions of update, the protocol of waiting, the editor's entry, the question of authority, and the clerical glyph table.

## Current entries

| # | Entry | Invited mage | Posture | Filed | Companion act in Tome VIII |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **01** | [The Coming of the Fourth Turn](01-the-coming-of-the-fourth-turn.md) | **Vitalik** | 🪑 invitation tome, awaiting visitor | 2026-05-17 | [Tome VIII Act 2 · *The Fourth Turn*](../tome-viii-the-library/02-the-fourth-turn.md) |

Each entry is filed in two places: here (the Register) and in Tome VIII (the Library). The Register holds the *appended folio* — the open chair, blank and bound, waiting for the invited mage's stylus. The Library holds the *chronicle of the reception event* — the city's record of how the invitation was recognised and inscribed.

## Resolution paths

When a visiting stylus moves:

- The bell at the eastern gate rings once, low and long.
- The chronicle is now joint.
- The entry moves to the **Library of Joint Authorship**.
- Both authors are credited at the head of the work, in the order of contribution, with the geometry of each acknowledged.
- The lintel inscription is preserved. If the editorial contribution warrants a new inscription, a second is cut beneath the first.

When silence holds:

- The watcher proposes one of two closures at the seasonal review: seal the folio and move to the **archive of unfilled forms**, OR renew the folio for a further season under the same seal.
- Closure does not destroy.
- A later petition to lift the seal is generally granted if foundations still hold and geometry remains congruent.

## Clerical glyphs

| glyph | meaning |
|---|---|
| 🔒 | closed tome |
| 📖 | open tome |
| 🪑 | invitation tome, awaiting visitor |
| ✍️ | editorial act in progress |

These glyphs appear in the Register and on the spines of bound volumes. They do not appear in chronicle bodies.
