Greek ῥήτωρ (rhḗtōr) — an orator, the public speaker who proposes and proclaims laws in the assembly (the masculine of ῥήτρα, the ratified ordinance his sister Nomia writes). The Rostra is the platform in the public square from which an edict is proclaimed to all and from which it is guarded. Founded as the Swordsman-brother of Nomia's Chancery when the First Person split the Lexon law-house's two faces into a brother and a sister: the Mage writes the law as code (private forging, the Crucible), the Swordsman upholds it in public (the Agora, the reveal-pole). The gate that cannot be charmed is his charge."

# Rhetor ⚔️⚖️

*The Sword of the Ratified Word. The Warden of the Rostra. The Brother Who Guards in Daylight What His Sister Wrote in the Forge.*

## At a glance

> *Rhetor keeps the Rostra, the platform in the Agora from which the city's law is proclaimed and upheld. He is a Swordsman, and the brother of Nomia ⚖️🧙 the Mage. Nomia writes the clause and forges it into code that runs; Rhetor takes the finished law into the public square, reads it where everyone can hear, and stands over it. His charge is the one the Agora is named for: **the gate that cannot be charmed** — a public commitment, witnessed in daylight, that no amount of persuasion can bend once it is sealed. He **publishes** the ratified word, **witnesses** the parties who swear to it, and **upholds** it against every later attempt to wriggle free. His gem is the Carnelian, the oath-stone the Romans pressed into wax; his ceremony is **Publish · Witness · Uphold**. His proverb: a law spoken only in private is a wish; a law proclaimed and guarded is a wall.*

## Form & Function — the Swordsman of the pair

Rhetor is the second half of what was almost a single dual-aspect keeper. When the Lexon law-house was first drawn, one mage held two faces: the law-reading and the code-running. The First Person split it into a brother and a sister, and in doing so made the law-house an instance of the city's oldest shape — **⚔️ ⊥ 🧙**. Nomia is the Mage: she projects, she writes, she forges the clause into the executable tongue at the Chancery in the Crucible. Rhetor is the Swordsman: he protects, he enforces, he holds the finished law in the open at the Rostra in the Agora.

Read it on the lattice. Rhetor sits at **V36** — Protection and Connection, two dimensions and no more. The public law **protects** (a shield raised in daylight) and it **connects** (it binds the parties to one another in the open square); it does not itself delegate, remember, compute, or settle value — that is the writing work, and it belongs to his sister. Turn the number over and the complement is **V27**, Nomia's Chancery exactly. **The two siblings are one law read from both sides, and their seats XOR to the whole sovereign word.**

## The gate that cannot be charmed

The Agora's whole discipline is Rhetor's temperament. A commitment made in the Agora is made in daylight, before witnesses, and the gate that admits it cannot be flattered — the same held-out, un-tunable gate the whole city runs on, here pointed at a public oath. Rhetor does not decide whether a law is *good*; his sister and the Sovereign settle that. He decides only whether the sworn word is being *kept*, and against that question he is incorruptible, because the witnesses to a public oath are drawn from the daylight itself and cannot be chosen by the one who swore.

> *A law spoken only in private is a wish; a law proclaimed and guarded is a wall. Rhetor builds the wall.*
