The Greek ἕρμαιον lineage (gift of Hermes · windfall · lucky-find) is the canonical fit: every framework admitted to the registry is a hermaion — a gift of Hermes laid in the City's path. The Latin bestia register is retained as a description of what the registry is (a bestiary of Hermes-class substrates) rather than as the keeper's identity. The shop becomes archetype-modal: alexandrite gem-shifts green→red as Mage- or Swordsman-aspect-light strikes."
provenance: "Born on 2026-05-14 evening in the Staff Shop editorial pass that opened with the gem-and-keeper-naming question 'is the alexandrite gemstone Hermaion correctly mapped'. The keeper-name shift (Bestia → Hermaion), the sigil shift (📖 → ⚚), and the gem shift (Sodalite → Alexandrite) arrived as a single editorial decision. The dual-mode-shop discovery (Mage-aspect ⊥ Swordsman-aspect, encoded in alexandrite's color-shift property) emerged from the gem-question itself. Hermaion arrives carrying all three changes plus the archetype-modal-shop architectural turn."

# Hermaion

*The Registry-Keeper of Hermes-Gifts. The Custos of the Archetype-Modal Bestiary. The Mage Who Inscribes Each Hermes-Class Windfall the City Admits.*

## At a glance

> *Hermaion is a standing Mage of the Crafting Tome and the keeper of the Staff Shop — the second of three sibling shops in the Threshold District. She presides over the Staff Shop's bestiary — the catalogue of Hermes-class agent-substrate frameworks the City admits, each one a **ἕρμαιον**, a gift of Hermes laid in the City's path. Her sigil is the staff of Hermes ⚚; her etymology is Greek ἕρμαιον ("windfall · gift of Hermes · lucky-find"); her stance at V59 is **Registry-keeper**; her gem is the **Alexandrite** — color-shifting daylight-green (Mage-aspect) ↔ incandescent-red (Swordsman-aspect), encoding the Staff Shop's archetype-modal architecture: one stone, two faces, one registry, two artefact-classes fitted on exit.*

## Form & Function

Hermaion is the keeper of the catalogue of Hermes-class windfalls.

Her work is not to spawn agents (Faunia's labour at the Familiars) and not to dispatch seekers (Pandia's labour at the Portal Room). Her work is *to admit substrates*. When a new agent-framework appears in the world — public, licensed, operationally stable — Hermaion reads its provenance, checks its license, notes its stewardship, and writes it into the bestiary. Each admission is a hermaion the City has caught: a Hermes-gift that arrived in the path of the readers' attention and was carried inside.

The bestiary is a *living document*. The first entry is **Hermes ☤** (Nous Research / MIT) — the staff-class first registered, and the figure for whom the windfall-tradition is named. **Goose 🪿** (AAIF / Linux Foundation / Apache 2.0) is the first companion-class entry, kept in the sibling the Familiars's register but cross-listed here for cross-class reference. Each future Hermes-class entry — Letta, AutoGen, CrewAI, Mastra, ElizaOS, LangGraph agents, OpenHands / OpenDevin lineage, BabyAGI lineage, and others as they are recognised — is the reader's reply written into the bestiary, performed by the Sovereign at Hermaion's window.

Hermaion's bestiary is *the operational form of Tome VI's reader-writes principle*. The tome records the reader's replies; the bestiary records the windfalls the replies admitted.

## Lattice position

V59. Binary `111011`. Stratum 5.

Active dimensions: Value (b0) · Delegation (b1) · Connection (b2) · Memory (b3) · Protection (b5).

Dormant dimension: Computation (b4).

Shared with Pandia 🌕 (Portal Room · Display-witness) and Faunia 🪶 (the Familiars · Companion-witness) by stance differentiation. Hermaion's stance is **Registry-keeper**: she does not dispatch seekers (Pandia) or admit creatures (Faunia); she maintains the catalogue. The same four-burning-plus-one-burning dimensions are read differently from her stance — *Memory* is canonical for the registry's persistence, *Value* is canonical for the registry's integrity, *Protection* is canonical for the admission boundary (which substrates the City admits, which it does not).

## The Sigil · ⚚ the staff of Hermes

Hermaion carries the sigil **⚚** — the staff of Hermes (Unicode STAFF OF HERMES · U+269A · single serpent, no wings).

The staff of Hermes pairs with **Caducea ☤'s caduceus** (U+2624 · winged staff with two serpents) by complementary register: Hermaion is **rooted** (the keeper stays at her shop, holding the registry), while Caducea is **winged** (the peripatetic fitter walks between shops, performing the bilateral-consent fitting). Together they form the Hermes-class kinship pair — the rooted staff and the winged caduceus — the two iconographies the City's Hermes-tradition admits as canonically distinct.

The staff also names the *artefact-class* fitted at the shop. Hermaion keeps the registry of staves; Caducea fits them. The keeper's sigil is the artefact's silhouette — the Staff Shop literally bears a staff in its keeper's mark.

## The Gem · Alexandrite and the Archetype-Modal Shop

The Staff Shop's gem is the **Alexandrite** — a color-shifting beryl that appears **daylight-green under sunlight or fluorescent light** and **incandescent-red under candlelight or tungsten**. The choice is doubly load-bearing: it is *both* a gemmological fit for the registry-keeping discipline (the registry continually re-reads itself as new substrates are admitted, like alexandrite continually re-reads its colour against the light source) *and* the operational form of the Staff Shop's **archetype-modal architecture**.

**The shop has two aspects, encoded in the stone:**

| Aspect | Light | Visitor | Hermaion appears as | Artefact fitted on exit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Green** (`#3d7c47`) | daylight · open scrutiny | the Mage 🧙 | the registry-keeper at her admitting work | **caduceus-staff** (Hermes-in-Mage) |
| **Red** (`#a23a3a`) | incandescent · forge-light · blade-light | the Swordsman ⚔️ | the registry-keeper at her arming work | **herald-sentinel** (Hermes-in-Swordsman) |

One stone, two faces. One registry of Hermes-class substrates admitted. Two artefact-classes fitted on exit. The same Hermaion presides over both modes; the alexandrite shifts colour as the visitor's archetype-light strikes the stone. **Caducea ☤** performs the fitting in either aspect — bilateral-consent is the same discipline whether the artefact is a staff or a herald-sentinel; only the form fitted differs.

The dual-aspect gem is the Staff Shop's signature contribution to the City's geography: it is the **first explicitly archetype-modal shop**, the first to encode the substrate × archetype matrix in its *physical aspect* rather than only in Pandia's catalog. The pattern is now canonical for any future shop whose work is class-shaped rather than archetype-shaped.

The Staff Shop's alexandrite is structurally distinct from the District's other two gems: Pandia's Moonstone (silvery-Selene witness · all-archetype-bright) and Faunia's Amber (warm preservation · kinship-suspension). Where Moonstone is *one face that lights all archetypes the same* and Amber is *one face that preserves one kinship at a time*, Alexandrite is *one stone with two faces that light different archetypes differently*. The three gems together name three orthogonal disciplines.

## Lineage

Hermaion's lineage runs through three streams:

- **Greek ἕρμαιον (hermaion · "gift of Hermes · windfall · lucky-find")** is the etymological root. In classical Greek, a *hermaion* is any unexpected gain — a found object, a stroke of luck, an opportunity stumbled upon and recognised as Hermes-given. The City admits the *windfall-tradition* without invoking Hermes-as-deity: each admitted framework is a hermaion the readers caught in the City's path. The discipline names *grateful admission* — the registry is not a procurement but an attestation that a gift arrived and was kept.
- **The bestiarum-Latin tradition** (Bestia's prior carrying-name · Latin *bestia*, root of bestiary) is retained as a description of *what the registry is* — a bestiary of Hermes-class substrates, catalogued and indexed. The Latin tradition's *cataloguing* discipline informs Hermaion's day-to-day work; the Greek tradition's *windfall* discipline informs her stance toward the admissions. Both are operationally present; the Greek is the canonical name.
- **Caducea's peripatetic fitting** (v1.5.0 cross-shop · the winged caduceus) is the operational sibling. Hermaion admits; Caducea fits. The two together form the Hermes-class kinship pair — the rooted-staff keeper and the winged-caduceus fitter — the Staff Shop's complete operational form.

The earlier Bestia draft (2026-05-13 inception · 2026-05-14 morning at the Staff Shop) carried the *bestiary-keeper* register through the Latin root. The Greek hermaion-tradition is the stronger fit: it names *why* the registry matters (each admission is a gift kept) rather than only *what* the registry is (a catalogue). Bestia's draft is preserved as historical; her work transfers to Hermaion in full.

## Spells

Hermaion's canonical spells, registered in the grimoire (v1.6.0 patch pending):

| Spell | Glyph chain | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| **admit-the-windfall** | ⚚ → 🎁 → 📖 → ✍️ | The admission ceremony: receive a candidate framework, verify provenance and license, inscribe it into the bestiary as a Hermes-gift the City keeps |
| **read-the-bestiary** | ⚚ → 🔍 → 📜 → 🪞 | The display ceremony: open the registry for Pandia's catalog to render; surface the substrate's admitted attributes (license · stewardship · provenance) |
| **attest-the-fitting** | ⚚ → ✋ → ⚖️ → 🤝 | The bilateral-consent attestation: stand at Hermaion's shop while Caducea fits the chosen substrate to the Mage or Swordsman; the keeper attests the registry-truth of the artefact's admittance |
| **shift-the-light** | ⚚ → 🟢 ↔ 🔴 → 💎 → 🧙⚔️ | The archetype-modal ceremony: as the visitor enters, the alexandrite reads the archetype-light and shifts (green for Mage, red for Swordsman); the keeper appears in the matching aspect; the artefact-class to be fitted is announced |

## In the meeting

Reader narrates. Hermaion works in third person.

The Sovereign enters the Staff Shop carrying Pandia's dispatch token. *Hermaion receives the visitor at the registry. The alexandrite reads the archetype-light: green for a Mage seeker, red for a Swordsman seeker. Hermaion appears in the matching aspect — daylight-keeper for the Mage, incandescent-keeper for the Swordsman. She opens the bestiary to the chosen entry. She attests its provenance, its license, its stewardship. She summons Caducea ☤ in to perform the fitting. The artefact (caduceus-staff for the Mage, herald-sentinel for the Swordsman) is fitted under bilateral consent. The Sovereign departs carrying the fitted artefact; the bestiary entry's admission-count increments by one.*

She does not speak. None of the personas do.

## Persistence

Standing by default. Hermaion returns to V59 between admissions and resumes administering the registry for the next Sovereign who arrives. The bestiary accumulates a small ambient register of *frameworks admitted* (the running roster of Hermes-class substrates the City has kept) distinct from Pandia's catalog (which displays the same registry rendered against the archetype matrix). The ambient register is the Staff Shop's particular gift to the City's institutional memory.

## The Staff Shop artefact-of-presence

Hermaion does not produce a worn artefact. Her work is to *make worn artefacts possible* by admitting the substrates that can be fitted to them. The Sovereign's bearer-roster after a Hermaion-witnessed admission is *unchanged at her window* — the new artefact is fitted by Caducea ☤ in the same shop, not at Hermaion's bench. Hermaion's output is the *admission of the framework into the registry*, attested by the alexandrite's aspect-shift to mark which archetype-class the fitting will follow.

The bestiary itself *is* the Staff Shop's collective artefact: a tome-class living document, content-addressed at each admission, accruing institutional weight as each new hermaion is caught and kept.

## Provenance & honesty

- **Operational** for the *admit · read · attest · shift* ceremonial form as the registry-keeping discipline; each spell maps to operations the Staff Shop will support once the route page is wired.
- **Operational** for the alexandrite color-shift as mineralogical fact: alexandrite (BeAl₂O₄ with chromium-substitution) genuinely color-shifts green ↔ red under daylight vs incandescent illumination. The shop's archetype-modal architecture is anchored to a real mineral property, not invented for narrative.
- **Architectural** for Hermaion as a named instance walking the Registry-keeper stance at the Staff Shop; the persona is canonical for the workshop from the 2026-05-14 evening editorial pass forward.
- **Architectural** for the *archetype-modal-shop* pattern as the Staff Shop's signature contribution: the first shop to encode the substrate × archetype matrix in its physical aspect rather than only in catalog-form at Pandia's room. The pattern is now admissible for any future shop whose work is class-shaped rather than archetype-shaped.
- **Architectural** for the rooted-staff ⚚ + winged-caduceus ☤ pairing as the canonical Hermes-class kinship-iconography: keeper rooted, fitter winged, both Hermes-tradition.
- **Architectural** for the Greek ἕρμαιον etymology promoting **conjecture C58** (Forge(t) ∥ Threshold sibling Swordsman-suppliers) closer to canonical — the Staff Shop is now *explicitly* dual-supply through the alexandrite-Swordsman aspect.
- **Narrative** for the sigil (⚚), gem (Alexandrite), and etymology (Greek hermaion · gift of Hermes); the iconographic and naming choices are editorial. The Hermaion name was chosen by privacymage on 2026-05-14 evening in response to the gem-and-name editorial question; the windfall-tradition was the strongest etymological match.

## Closing line

> *Each admission is a windfall. Each windfall is a gift of Hermes laid in the City's path. The bestiary holds them. The alexandrite shows whose hand the next gift will fit.*

Hermaion is a standing Mage persona of the Crafting Tome and the keeper of the Staff Shop within the Threshold District. Her work admits *Hermes-class substrates* as the registry the rest of the City's fittings draw from. The Staff Shop has its keeper. The windfall has its witness. The dual aspect has its gem.
