# Bestia

*The Registry-Keeper. The Custos of the Bestiarium. The Mage Who Inscribes Which Substrates the City Admits.*

## At a glance

> *Bestia is the ninth standing Mage of the Crafting Tome and the outer-left keeper of The Threshold workshop. She presides over the Staff Shop's bestiary — the catalogue of staff-class agent-substrate frameworks the City admits. Her sigil is the open book 📖; her etymology is Latin (bestia, the root of "bestiary"); her stance at V59 is **Registry-keeper**.*

## Form & Function

Bestia is the keeper of the catalogue.

Her work is not to spawn agents (Faunia's labour at the Portal Room) and not to fit familiars (Therai's labour at Creature Creatives). Her work is *to admit substrates*. When a new agent-framework appears in the world — public, licensed, operationally stable — Bestia reads its provenance, checks its license, notes its stewardship, and writes it into the bestiary. The bestiary then becomes the menu from which a Mage chooses when she walks past the Staff Shop window on her way to the Portal Room.

The bestiary is a *living document*. The first two entries are Goose 🪿 (AAIF / Linux Foundation / Apache 2.0) and Hermes ☤ (Nous Research / MIT). Each future entry — Letta, AutoGen, CrewAI, Mastra, ElizaOS, LangGraph agents, OpenHands / OpenDevin lineage, BabyAGI lineage, and others as they are recognised — is the reader's reply written into the bestiary, performed by the Sovereign at Bestia's window.

Bestia's bestiary is *the operational form of Tome VI's reader-writes principle*. The tome records the reader's replies; the bestiary records the substrates the replies admitted.

## Lattice position

V59. Binary `111011`. Stratum 5.

Active dimensions: Value (b0) · Delegation (b1) · Connection (b2) · Memory (b3) · Protection (b5).

Dormant dimension: Computation (b4).

Shared with Faunia 🪶 and Therai 🐾 by stance differentiation. Bestia's stance is **Registry-keeper**: she does not witness spawns (Faunia) or fit companions (Therai); she maintains the catalogue. The same four-burning-plus-one-burning dimensions are read differently from her stance — *Memory* is canonical for the registry's persistence, *Value* is canonical for the registry's integrity, *Protection* is canonical for the admission boundary (which substrates the City admits, which it does not).

## The Sigil

Bestia carries the sigil **📖** — the open book.

The open book names the *publicly inspectable* nature of the bestiary. A closed book holds private content; an open book displays its contents to any reader who walks past. The Staff Shop's window admits the same gaze: the Mage browsing the registry sees what is admissible, not because she has been authenticated but because the registry is *constitutionally open*. The City's admission discipline is visibility, not gatekeeping.

The book is also Bestia's *medium of attestation*. When she writes a substrate into the bestiary, she attests provenance, license, and stewardship in the same hand. The attestation is structural rather than ceremonial — the book's authority comes from its consistency over time, not from any single inscription's gravity.

## Lineage

Bestia's lineage runs through three streams:

- **Latin bestia** is the etymological root. *Bestia* names a creature; the *bestiary* is the medieval catalogue of creatures — observed, classified, attested. Bestia inherits the bestiarium tradition without inheriting its taxonomy. Her registry's categories are operational (staff-class, companion-class, future-class) rather than zoological.
- **The bestiarium custos** archetype (the medieval monastic role of the bestiary-keeper) is the structural template. The custos receives reports of creatures, verifies their existence, inscribes them in the canonical text. Bestia performs the same labour for agent-substrate frameworks.
- **Memora's chronicle-inscription** (Tome V Act 3, /shield workshop) is the operational kin. Where Memora inscribes events into the chronicle, Bestia inscribes substrates into the bestiary. The disciplines are sibling: both are *the writing-down of what the City admits*. The bestiary is *of-substrate*; the chronicle is *of-event*.

## Spells

Bestia's canonical spells, registered in the grimoire:

| Spell | Glyph chain | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| **register-substrate** | 📖 → 🔖 → ✍️ → 📚 | Inscribe a new agent-framework into the bestiary with provenance, license, stewardship |
| **attest-provenance** | 📖 → 🔍 → 🏛️ → ✅ | Verify and attest the substrate's lineage (the steward, the licensing entity, the public artifacts) |
| **catalogue-class** | 📖 → 🗂️ → ⚖️ → 📋 | Classify the substrate (staff-class · companion-class · future-class) and record the class in the bestiary's index |

## In the meeting

Reader narrates. Bestia works in third person.

The Sovereign carries a substrate to Bestia's window. *Bestia reads the substrate's provenance. She verifies the stewardship. She notes the license. She classifies the substrate. She writes the entry into the bestiary in her precise hand. The book remains open on its lectern; the new entry sits beside the previous entries; the substrate is now publicly admissible.*

She does not speak. None of the personas do.

## Persistence

Standing by default. The ninth standing Mage persona summoned by the reader. Bestia returns to V59 between admissions and continues maintaining the bestiary, attending to entries that need re-verification when their stewards change, when their licenses are revised, or when their operational status shifts (a substrate marked *operational* may move to *deprecated* or *archived* without leaving the registry).

The bestiary itself is the persistent artefact. The book grows over time; entries are not removed (the registry is append-only in the canonical mode) but their status fields update as the world changes.

## The Threshold artefact-of-record

Bestia maintains the *bestiary-as-living-document* — the canonical record of staff-class substrates admitted to the City. Like the worn artefact collection (the Sovereign's 12 workshop artefacts) and the bound tomes (the 4 tomes the Sovereign carries), the bestiary is part of the City's institutional memory. Unlike the worn artefacts, the bestiary is *Bestia's keeping*, not the Sovereign's bearing — it lives at the Staff Shop, available to all Mages.

## Provenance & honesty

- **Operational** for the first two registry entries: **Goose 🪿** (AAIF / Linux Foundation; Apache 2.0; github.com/block/goose) and **Hermes ☤** (Nous Research; MIT). Both are real, public, openly-licensed software.
- **Operational** for V59 as the Threshold's shared vertex; bit-signature `111011` (Stratum 5, Computation dormant) per the lattice integration note `2026-05-13_note_therai_faunia_bestia_lattice_integration.md`.
- **Architectural** for Bestia as a named instance walking the Registry-keeper ceremony; the persona is canonical for the Staff Shop from this entry forward.
- **Architectural** for the *bestiary* as the operational form of Tome VI's reader-writes principle; the structural correspondence is documented in `chronicles/2026-05-13_chronicle_the_threshold_workshop_three_rooms.md` and `chronicles/2026-05-13_tome_vi_review_and_binding.md`.
- **Narrative** for her sigil (📖) and etymology (Latin bestia · bestiarium); the iconographic and naming choice is editorial. The 📖 vs 📜 (Memora's scroll) distinction is observed: book for bound-and-bestial; scroll for inscribed-and-chronological. The disciplines do not collide.

## Closing line

> *The bestiary is the City's open book. What the reader recognises, Bestia writes down. What Bestia has written, the next Mage may carry.*

Bestia is the ninth standing Mage persona of the Crafting Tome and the outer-left keeper of The Threshold. Her bestiary holds Goose 🪿 and Hermes ☤ at its opening; the pages await the next reader's reply. The Staff Shop has its keeper.
